Hello,

I have just joined as I have recently taken delivery of a 2023 Norton Commando 961SP.

I was hoping someone had a recommendation for a suitable rear paddock stand as I was going to use R&G bobbins / cotton reels with a R&G “Elevation” rear paddock stand but unfortunately it looks like the Solihull built bikes so not have the 6mm mounting brackets under the swinging arm that were on the Donington built bike so any paddock stand is going to have to lift the bike on pads from under the swinging arm as opposed to hooks under cotton reels / bobbins.

Many thanks

Congratulations on your purchase!
I just went to check - our 2022 Classic still has the preparation holes on both sides, now blocked with a round-head hex bolt. Old stock from previous Norton?
They are perfectly invisible unless you actually get down to take a closer look.
I wonder why these were not carried over. You could try your luck and ask the dealer or the manufacturer why this is so. This is exactly the kind of question that would raise great surprise on here if answered officially.

Hi @iansm , welcome and congrats on your purchase. How are you finding it so far?

The ommission of the bobbin mounts has been mentioned by other owners of the 961SP model on the 961 Facebook page as well. I think one of them asked Norton, and was informed they can clash with the exhaust.

Alright, seems very plausible if you were to leave them on.
In that case, was this ever a problem for anyone here?

Not a problem for me . It works and they can stay on if the bobbin is no more then ~ 15mm tall . Measure with a straight edge laid on the face of the bobbin toward the muffler mounts , it should clear. Other option is to use large bolts in the hollow axle and lift from there or a stand with flat fingers for lifting on the swingarm.

Thanks, that confirms my own plans. Nothing urgent, but I will have a stand one way or another. Before having tried any of the three options, they all seem to have both pros and cons in visuals and function/safety.

Being hand built, the Donington exhausts were at varying angles and dangles; my 15CR accepted a low profile set without difficulty. There are plenty of more discrete low profile bobbin types available - Rizoma and R&G make a pair for example. No bobbin height provided though, but easy enough to find out from a distributor.

Seems short sighted Norton did not include this functionality on the new SP. Not difficult you would think to configure to receive a set without removal to ride, of leave the requirement to remove them following use to the owner.

Quite a few universal stands available also though - Oxford make good strong products.

If short of space, or just want quality moveable stands these Dynamoto units are hard to beat - but rather expensive. You can turn the bike inside it’s own length and push it hard up against a wall for storage.

They enable me to get three bikes and two cars in a standard double garage. Great for generally moving around. Swivel, exhaust facing out of the garage to start up, swing back around and straight out - if going for a ride.

Australian firm going ‘gang busters’ selling them all over the world. They only work on spools but I thought I’d ask anyway - cos I’m nosy like that. Interesting response.

I've got the same Oxford stand for emergencies.....not a fan of it though, not a fan of platform stands as a whole.
I dont know about short sighted, I think it was just laziness on the designers part....wouldn't have taken much effort to address it correctly.

Stu, your preferred solution, please? For your workshop, and for home use?

I had a chat with Norton today and, whilst some is already mentioned above, I thought it beneficial to share the following. The deletion of bobbin mounts is due to exhaust clearance and as Norton now fit what was the previously optional sports exhaust as standard this means there is insufficient clearance on all new bikes. Norton are reviewing developing an accessory rear paddock stand to mount through the hollow parts of the rear wheel spindle but this is not imminent. Other owners of the latest bikes are using Oxford rear paddock stands with pads under the swinging arm.

Pretty much exactly what I said then.....a lazy design department solution. They redesigned nothing to solve the problem....they just deleted the option to fit bobbins.

Buy a Donington 961 instead 🤣

Joking aside, if you have to use a platform paddock stand, I'd also chock the front wheel to stop it rolling off the stand.
