Glad too see it’s fixed. Did you end up making a gasket?

maybe try some wheel cleaner on the ally fins?
Thanks Cliffa; Social media to the rescue, a local Yamaha dealer who used to own two 961's had some gaskets left from when he had his bikes. Lucked in big time, I got two of most of the gaskets and oil and air filters as well.
very pleased indeed.
I have scanned the head/ rocker cover, and also have made a cad/dwg file for future reference. I'll try and make that available to the forum members once completed. I'm going to try and do the other main gaskets as well.
stay tuned. I have a small manufacturing business and have access to cnc and laser cutting facilities should I get left short again in the future or others need some down this way.

Thanks Stephen, much appreciated. spray and scrub?,
I've noted just before Stephen, I'm in the process of creating a cad file of the gaskets as I scanned the covers when I had them off and have digitally made a gasket cad file for future use. Being down this way and not knowing what thew owners are going to be doing I took the opportunity to at least have an insurance policy! should I need another one or others down this way.

Hi All,

Quick update!
Thanks again for all the great advise, just wanted to finish this off as I've successfully replaced the rocker gasket and it's all fantastic and up and on the road again without to much fuss.
2.5 hours with some help from confident like minded staff to assist.
the gasket did actually have a number of fractures to it, but only the one full spit, guess this was the weak point. it was quite hard and brittle, the comment that it had sat for a 3 years unsold (not ridden)
therefore not having oil around it may have been the correct diagnosis?
images of the fail and cleaned & repaired.
Cheers all.
From the gasket pic I see mine went in exactly the same place, curious. I used 1mm Flexitallic CNAF but still get a mist after a good ride, a good reason to carry a handkerchief.

My absolute most fav. cleaner for almost anything is muc-off motorcycle chain cleaner. Brilliant and not chemically aggressive and doesn't smell too bad. Use it very successfully for hand cleaning too.

Be very careful cleaning hands with chemical products..
Dermatitis scourge of the old style mechanics. Ruined many a career. Wear nitrile gloves. This is a public information statement.

Or barrier cream. Remember the pink stuff? Hate working with gloves personally.

I hated gloves, but lots of benefits..and now after years, I feel strange working without them...although I do buy a few boxes of 100 at a time. There are the obvious issues, like skin issues/dermatitis, but handling used engine oils has been associated with cancer. I remember seeing Ed China comment on why he always wore orange gloves. He said something like a blood test showed hydrocarbons in his blood which could be at least partially attributed to absorbing these through his skin. Given the amount of spannering I do, benefits are probably marginal when it comes to long term exposure, but I like relatively clean and crack free skin.

I actually took a few scans of the throttle insulator gaskets - I'll get you a copy of those. I suspect people would be interested.

Spray on and leave for a few minutes P-R, agigtate with a brush if necessary and wash off - just used a wet sponge the last time. I don’t know whether it would leave a stain of a different type if you don’t wash it off.

I’ve used it to clean the upper head surface adjacent to the spark plug aperture’s and other cast finish engine areas with some success. Have’nt tried it on the fins yet. I’ll give it a go this weekend and let you know. I have also used it on the cast finished upper and lower triple clamps, also to good effect.

I’m pretty careful using it Gojuu, but my guess is you would just wipe it off polished surfaces without any staining. It does’nt strike me as a very ‘active’ solution. It doesn’t bubble or fizz when sprayed or agitated. I only had light staining on my bike - it has a pretty easy life. Don’t know how it would go with heavier grime and staining.

Those CAD files may be useful in the future. Good to know they are there if necessay.

Personally I love wearing rubber gloves - but that’s just me!!
