1974 Commando Paint - Blue

I had a theory that the pristine original blue was painted over because the prior owner wanted black. Now that I know the original blue tank was damaged before being painted black, I feel a bit better.

Here is a better shot of the tins on the bike. It is on the lift for some overdue maintenance.

After painting a steel tank to match the side cover (fireflake red) on my ‘69 750 S I can tell you getting an accurate representation of the “sparkle” in the photo is probably impossible.

This is the flake size I used which matched closely to the original in the fiberglass gel coat. I’m not sure the metal tank and side covers used the same size, but likely. Unlike my method shooting transparent color over silver flakes, modern metal flake is done with colored flakes then clear coat. If you stick with .004” size flake it will likely come out close to original.

Dave, that is one beautiful bike !!

One observation however. I've zoomed is as much as I can and (forgive me if I'm wrong) you don't appear to have a brake pedal return spring fitted. I would highly recommend the fitment of one if not as they are a potential life saver.

Cheers,

cliffa.

AFAIK The Roadsters were Fireflake Royal Blue, Interstates were Pacific Blue - lots of prior discussions as posted above - I believe it would have left the factory looking a lot like this?

Just looked at the brochure and this seems about spot on. Metalflake is highly susceptible to various lights even sunlight varies the colour from hour to hour during the same day.

That's the Interstate blue. Not the Roadster blue
From my 'investigations' I think that's the Pacific Blue - introduced '72 on Fibreglass tank Interstates and carried through to '73 on steel tank 850 Interstates - I had one. I also had a set of 'new/old stock' Mk2A sidepanels in this colour. I don't believe this colour made it through to Mk3 production, but I'll happily stand to be corrected
