1973 interstate reawakening

Good luck and have fun with your project, it is great that parts for these classics are available

Thanks. I still haven't had time to work on the Norton but I have dribbled a bit of oil into the cylinders and down the valves and later gently turned the engine over with the plugs out for one stroke.

I'm not legally allowed to ride the Norton until end of July so I have 5 months to get it sorted. The bike looks like it's been well taken care of in the past. I want to wait until I've got it started and have put a few miles on it before taking the engine apart (if it runs!). Amd 5 months isn't a lot of time when I can only spare a few hours here and there to work on it.

A new loom, new premier carbs or rebuild kits for the old amals and an EI setup will be my first big purchases.

Next step is to remove the primary cover and see what's going on underneath it. Putting my finger through the inspection hole, the chain is in one piece and tightly adjusted

Sounds like a good plan.

I think I lucked out... Just bought a 2nd hand steel tank online for a fraction of the price of an Indian tank and no customs to deal with. It will need de rusting inside and there's a dent to be sorted but I'm happy! It looks like a good starting point

So I found a few pieces of chain in the bottom of the primary case. Could this be the reason the bike was taken off the road?

No scoring, very clean inside and the sprockets look ok. About 2 litres of primeval soup drained out of the crankcase. Don't know how long the bike had been sitting for but it's clearly been a while! I'll start taking the engine out and apart as soon as I can to get down to the sludge trap.

Those chain bits could be off the primary chain. Inspect each link for missing rollers.

Unlikely, I'd have thought as the loss of a couple of rollers would go unnoticed without the primary cover being removed.

One picture shows a missing roller so no doubt both are from that primary chain.

Ummmmmm chain roller bits in the primary CHAIN case... Now where could THOSE be from?

I'm with L.A.B., probably never noticed; it wouldn't make the bike un-rideable.

That chain looks to have no slack so hope the sleeve gear bushes are OK for one thing.

I'll be taking the box apart to check everything in due course but yes, the chain is super tight compared to my triumphs!

I've got a clutch tool and sprocket extractor on the way. The new old tank has arrived but I've resisted the urge to unpack it until its next to the bike.

I need to make an engine stand next

It's a shame it isn't the same colour scheme, I would have kept it as is externally.

It will need a lot of de rusting !

Carbs are off! I didn't have a 7/32 socket so had to grind down a larger one to size. I've ordered one for next time

Should receive the tools needed to remove the clutch etc this week and will start on removing the head and gearbox next weekend

This must be the slowest dismantling thread ever... Bike is 30min away and I have the little guy with me most times so can't do much.

I should receive my exhaust clamp spanner, clutch and sprocket tools this week so will attempt to make better progress soon.

It doesn't help that I'm easily distracted!
