I have a 1973 Norton Commando 750. I need to replace the clutch. Here is my question. There is 4 friction plates, 5 plain plates, 1 pressure plate. The order they are installed from inner to outer are,

1 friction plate, against the clutch basket surface
1 plain plate
1 friction plate
1 plain plate
1 friction plate
1 plain plate
1 friction plate
1 plain plate
1 plain plate
1 pressure plate.

Is this normal to have two plain plates and the pressure plates all together? What do I need to order? Same setup or different? The clutch was not fully disengaging and the friction disc are worn down.

Last plain plate should be a friction plate. 5 friction 4 plane and a pressure plate.

I wonder if the last owner did this to lessen the drag or easy way to fill up clutch basket?

Your '73 model probably had the 5 (bronze) friction plate clutch originally which has been replaced with the 4 plate clutch so the extra plain plate was probably added to compensate for the lack of the fifth friction plate.

Is the pressure plate thick (4 plate) or thin (5 plate)?

Thanks for the info. So if I just drop a plain plate and add a friction plate I should be good?

I suggest you measure the stack height of the plates you have and compare that with the information given in the atlanticgreen link to determine what parts you need.

More stack height info.

Whatever you do to the last plate, changing it to a friction, you have to have a stack w/ pressure plate that sits flush with the top of the splines on the basket.
The 750 has 4 friction, 850 has 5.
Mine has 5 friction but need an extra plain to bring it to height. Not sure why

According to Norton Service Release N3/28 (Nov. 1972) the 5 bronze friction plate clutch was introduced on the 750 models from serial 212278, also there are no 4-plate clutch parts listed in the 1973 750/850 parts book.

I have seen 3 x 750 manufactured 1973. All had 5 plate (850) clutch and small sump plug.

Cheers
