I asked this question before but I can't find the answer.

My serial number seems to be an odd number. My serial number is 152690 which seems to fall between the last number in 1971 and the first in 1972. Is there any reason for this? Does anyone else have a serial number in this range?

Where did you find a list that gave such precise ranges of numbers ?

There are a few different versions of lists around, none of which agree precisely on dates and numbers.
That number would seem to fall somewhere between october 71 and jan 72, which where considered to be next years 72 model.
Hopethishelps.

Officially, 1972 production commenced from 200001. The official end of '71 production serial number published by the UK NOC is almost certainly wrong-as our members own several '71 spec. models with serial numbers higher than 150500.

Several of the many lists around (how can there be so many different versions ?) put 200,001 as at Jan 1972.
What happened to the 3 or 4 months of 1972 production at the end of 1971 ??
Or is that Jan date not correct, and they started making 1972 models in Sept 71.

You'd think that with the records being in the hands of the NOC, stuff like this should have been clarified 40 years ago.
Or since....

P.S. Does your bike have the red plate on the headstock, with the date stamped into it ?

The date often appears to be the official release date, not the actual start of production, this was highlighted here not long ago in a thread about the 850 model as 850 production officially commenced "March 1973", however, there is more than enough evidence from early 850 certification plate date stamps and AN records to prove that 850 production started in advance of March 1973.

The red plate on my headstock says 72 APR 207XXX

Definitely a crossover from 15x,xxx end and 200,001 beginning. My one page of late '71 factory build sheet - copied by the NOC has 151701 built Oct 7 '71 and shipped to Wessels the next day. 151703 finished Nov 3 although 151702 finished the next day. Both of these went to Berliner on Nov 30 '71. I've owned two '72 combats, first one had Oct 71 201123, the current one is stamped Dec 71.

My 850 is stamped January 1973, titled in the US as a 1974. So should I use a '73 shop manual or a '74 shop manual? I'm starting to think that this forum generally is more helpful than the official shop manual.

Use the '73 manual as there isn't any official later edition '74 version manual. :)

Hi jesterday, I know this is an old thread but in March 1972 I purchased a new Black Norton Commando Roadster, serial number 152681, from Stanco in Elizabeth Street Melbourne Australia. Stanco have long gone now. It was registered as a 1972 but was made in 1971. Unfortunately I sold this bike in 1975. I wonder if it is still out there?

The main difference between '71 and '72 model year is the change in crankcase from timed engine breather from left end of the camshaft to removal of the sum filter and breather at the lower left side of the crankcase. 152xxx will be the former all 200xxx are the latter.

I am 150649 seems to be a 71

1972 ? Commando 750 Serial number

my breather seems to show the earlier version? 71?

Yes, your bike is a 1971 model MikeM. The breather system was changed after the 1971 model year.

Not necessarily - the breather was changed part way into the 1972 model year, (from VIN 200,000)
so early 1972 models (made late 1971) would still have the earlier breather system.

The production year started earlier than the calendar year, don't forget...
