The seat that I have on my 1970 Roadster should be the same as an 'S' type, but can any member tell me how many rubber buffers there should be on the seat pan? are they all the same? and how are they fitted?
A photograph showing the underside of the seat would really be appreciated.
Regards, Paul.

Here's my new one from Walridge (RK Leighton) with the original one next to it for comparison. I doubt if you'll find a correct one.

And when you do replace it, make sure you have 4 1/2" above the chrome ring throughout the whole seat.

Thanks Dave you info is really helpful. The seat bas I have is slightly different to yours but fits well.(I'll post a photo asap). Is your base the original item or was it replaced?
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul,

Not original, but on my 850 seat that I converted from a Hi Rider back to a Roadster style, I could see the seat was prone to failure because it was not supported in enough places, along the frame, naturally this is my opinion only. But I fitted rubber door stoppers from the hardware, this was done before the foam and base were fitted. I added some extra buffers to provide maximum support for the seat base, off the frame top rails. Testimony the base is the original 1974 unit, and I have covered 10,000 miles mostly 2 up with no ill effects. Not original, but a sensible update if you are not obsessive about originality!

Cheers Richard

That's my original seat base. It was cracked right behind one of the tabs, where it makes the sharp bend. I brazed it. It was very rusty on the inside, but the bottom was not bad. I had it stripped and powder coated.

Might as well replace the rubber while you're in there. I didn't and it's pretty compressed, but I don't ride long distances. If you look around you can find a block of foam for about $20 and cut it with an electric knife or a very sharp knife, if you get it from Leighton you'll pay dearly for it.

I glued pieces of cut 3/8" hose on the frame where the rubber bumpers hit, and it raised it up a bit because it was hitting the side panels. I think if you are careful to get the bumpers fitting correctly where they meet the frame and rear mudguard, you shouldn't have any problems with cracking. Mine probably cracked because I stupidly raised the rear mudguard for a larger tyre at one point.
