The parts that might identify it as an 'R' Type are not in the photo, then again, it could be a Fastback with an R Type or later Roadster tank and seat etc.?

What parts would identify it as an R? Other than the rear fender, seat, and fuel tank (which are in the photo), don't the Fastback and R model share the same parts?

I think the R was after the tach off the cam. But I've been wrong, it seems to me the R was pretty much a combo of left over parts from the original fastback and the 70/71 Roadster or S types. At least that's the way I thought of it. I'm sure the R aficionados will chime in. I just remember it being a 70 with the FB oil tank. I can't find the brochure I thought I had. There's a good picture of the R floating around somewhere. RonL on the forum has one.

Some Norton advertisements for 1969 Commando R, pictures from an article done by Motorcycle Classics Magazine and a restored and somewhat modified 69 Commando R from the web.

Apparently not, at least not the early R model as the photos show.

The R was a 1969 model introduced approximately the same time as the S and discontinued later that year before the introduction of the Roadster (1970).

Two photos have been added to the post since I made that comment as only the first photo was there when I replied which doesn't show the tank and seat, however, yes they do, but as I said, it could just as easily be a modified Fastback, probably the only way to find out would be to contact the NOC or VMCC and check if that serial number is listed as an R.

Also is there anyone who makes replacement keys ?

Yes, you can buy replacement keys if you know the key/lock code, or key blanks.

Or you can buy a new lock barrel and keys.

A '69 model would normally have a 2-position S45 ignition switch (below) in which case you may find you have to drill an additional hole to the one shown in the body of the switch in order to extract the lock barrel if you don't have a key (unlike the later 4-position 149SA switches where the barrel can be removed without the key). A 'tool' (not necessarily an Allen key as shown) is used to depress the lock retaining pin.

How many R 's were made ?

There's no official production number for the R (or most of the other Commando models) as far as I know.
As the R was only made for about 6 months or so, and the relatively small numbers that survive I doubt it could have been much more than a few hundred.
