I think, unless they changed by then , the were 2x 6v Lucas motorcycle batteries wired up to 12volt.

Yes they were originally two 6 volt wired in series to produce 12 volts. No need for that now. Just get the largest AGM (glass mat) battery that will fit. Use rubber pads plus the original holder to make certain it is secure and to isolate it from vibration..
