I have the clutch and inner primary cover off
I am sure I am missing something,
With the clutch off, there is 'daylight' around the transmission shaft
Wouldn't there be a seal of some sort between the primary cover and the transmission?
Unfortunately the parts book doesn't have a diagram for this area

There should be a sliding plate covering the oval shaped hole with a hole in the center for the transmission shaft. This plate consisted of an inside plate and a corresponding outside plate, and spot welded together in place on the inner cover. It becomes part of the inner cover, and that is why there is no part number for the sliding plate.

I know a pic is worth a thousand words .... maybe someone can put up one of the inner cover with the sliding "seal" in place.

In use, the sliding plate moves with the transmission shaft when the primary chain is adjusted, and the major diameter of the slider covers the oval hole.

Your PO butchered this, and there is no way you can keep oil in the primary without the "seal". I put seal in quotes because is is not much of a seal.

I put a gutter over the top of my slider to duct oil fore and aft, rather than allow oil to run into the gap between the inner and outer plates making up the slider.

Thanks! that makes sense
There is a primary cover on ebay now but it doesn't seem to have the sliding seal you are talking about either
Do you adjust the primary chain by moving the transmission forward and aft? It does look like it is mounted in slotted holes
I hope someone can post some photos and dimensions, my only hope might be to have this slider thing fabricated
There is no bearing / seal where the transmission shaft goes through the slider?

Mercury inner chaincase. One of the 3 rivets is missing.
You can see the range of movement of the discs from the rust mark...
Discs are 3 & 3/8" diam.
There should be a hint of a rubber/nylon/plastic seal in the rivet area there, it has vanished. (?)

Here is an inner cover on eBay which has the sliding seal in place ....

There are several others on eBay which are missing the seal.

I don't know your shop skills or fabrication resources, but I Would think it not too difficult to come up with something. If memory serves me, there is a felt washer on the trans. shaft.

I drilled out the spot welds on mine to separate the inner and outer plates, then bonded in a felt washer of the major diameter, I think this gives a better seal than the loose gap of the factory configuration. Then I fastened the inner an outer plates together with 4-40 screws with red loctited nuts, tightening just enough to be a snug sliding fit. You might consider such an approach.

Good luck with it.

You can use commando discs from Andover including the felt seal

Good suggestion as the later alternator type inner cover won't work for your 1957 mag-dyno.
