A friend who had a New 916 Norton on order for 17 months as asked for is money back [£1300 deposite], Norton replied " No problem you willl recieve it in the next 60 days"
Norton took the £1300 in minutes off him at a show, kept it for 17 months and will return it in 60 days... :?:

The loan that Vince Cable arranged with the spanish bank, is for export bikes only, so any British orders for a british bike made in Britian ...well they are pushed back of the queue.......I advised my friend to get a real Norton Commando..he wasnt impressed :!:

So, help me understand where the new Norton stands now.... have people gotten them? A few? When? Are they foundering? Thriving?

John,

I don't want to be cynical, but 60-days and I promise not to come in your mouth, bout the same thing old mate!

Cheers Richard

Carefull Richard! Sexist remarks and the forum! But you have proberly hit the Nail, Why should anyone believe what they say, it's a good job "we" are happy with the old girls, anyway who's got £14,000 the spend ? Plus not knowing if,when it's going to turn up.

Lots, or there wouldn't be such a long waiting list...and at least they get plenty of time to save up!

£14,000 is hardly a huge amount for a bike these days-is it (for instance, a basic GL1800 Gold Wing costs £24,000)?

The new Norton company cannot ramp up fast enough to satisfy worldwide demand for their products.

It seems clear that they really blew it by taking deposits and making very unrealistic delivery promises.

At some point their production ability should be able to keep up with demand, some years down the road.

And we will look back and say they had some "teething" problems in the early years.

£24,000 for a Honda GL . :!: I need to get out more.

1500 USD in 1969 is 9400 USD today. So you can see how much
a new Norton was then and now so to speak. Now factor in
the value and compare a 69 Norton to a 2012 Norton.
Also figure how long it took you to save up for a new bike in 69.
Most of us oldsters were making 2 bucks an hour IF we had
a really great job.

This oldster was making $3.65 an hour at age 16, enough to save for a year and a half living at home to lay down $1200 for a used 1970 Norton S at an Ottawa dealership. Drove for a year on it not spending a penny on parts. Just gas n' oil. Booze and Insurance were my only expenses. Off to Prince of Darkness Rally now one day early to fish along the way. Heard via my grapeline the new Nort. lacks SOUL when driven.

The big difference between then and now, is what you get to keep out of what you earn so even with very low wages back then, there was plenty to spend on toys, especially if you were still living with your parents. Even at $2 per hour, it didn't take long to save for my first Norton (1969 S bought in early 1970 for $1,350) If I remember right, out of the $80 I earned, I got $75 so it took about 20 weeks of work to buy it. When I last had a job, I could barely get 50% of my pay so a $20,000 new Commando would have taken about the same work time time IF it was the only thing I had to spend money on. With a house and car and... it would take twice as long, but that is not Norton's fault.

Jean
