Which would you want?

Would any of you, especially the lucky ones that seen them in the flesh.
Would you take a Atlas Nomad or Ranger over a Commando?

Being that I live in the USA I haven’t had the opportunity to see a Atlas Nomad in person.
I should also say that when I seen pictures of the Commando and Dominator on line I just drooled over them and never seen those in person either. I purchased them site unseen.

I love both of my bikes, but I want a 2 up bike so my girl can ride on back.
Putting a passenger seat on my Commando is not really a option for me. I don’t see much sense of putting a $3000+ USD seat on the bike.

I really like the looks of the Atlas Nomad and I also do not need 3 bikes.

My bike of choice is my Naked when I want to take a ride, while my Commando just sits. My Commando SF is a 2016 and only has 320 miles on her.

Would I be making a mistake to sell the Commando and replace it with a Atlas?
Or should I keep the Commando and add a rear seat?
Or add a Atlas to my garage and keep the Commando?

I have no interest in other brands of bikes except Triumph. I seen the new Speed Twin at the local bike show and I really like it, but I like the Atlas looks better.
The Speed Twin checks all the boxes.

It’s a Norton.
Down fall. New model, first year out, new everything, unproven.
 
I haven't seen the newbies in the flesh but do like the look of the Ranger, sadly unless the lottery comes in i won't be getting one.
Speculation only but I expect the 961 will be more akin to riding the original Commando whereas the Ranger will be more like a modern higher revving machine - Duc 620 in my case.
Assuming i eventually get the idle issues etc resolved the 961 is more me if the descriptions above are at all accurate. But if anyone is offering i wouldn't say no to having both :rolleyes:
 
I saw them both at the NEC show last year and if it hadn’t been for the Superlight side swiping me, I’d have ordered a Ranger.

But...

They’re not the biggest bikes out there physically, so I’d wonder about 2 up comfort for long rides.

And whilst that 650 engine looks great, again, I’d wonder about its 2 up performance, it looks like it might be quite a rev hungry unit, and not perhaps ideal for relaxed 2 up work.

Both of the above points are pure conjecture however. But they mean that personally, I’d want to test ride before buying IF two up work was my main focus.

I would certainly not spend thousands converting a single seat Commando into a dual seat job. It would be far more sensible to simply sell it and buy a new one, all new Commandos are twin seat as standard.

The Speed Twin would be a very practical choice, it would be a very trouble free and comfortable 2 up bike and will have plenty of performance.

But... after being used to Norton’s, it would be a very dull ride.
 
Safe to assume you are talking about the not yet in the showroom Triumph 1200 Street Twin and not the 865 (900) Street Twin? Here's the thing....I'm betting overall quality of mounted components and attention to detail would probably go to the Norton. Triumph has loads of plastic on them, even though the technology is not subpar.

Living in the States, I'd definitely go for the Triumph. That is unless you live close to Austin Texas or near the Norton dealership in California. You can spit and hit a Triumph dealership. Customer support and ease of taking care of those problems, of which there will be so many less, has to be worth something. Also, keep the naked, dump the Commando. One more thing....96 HP for the Triumph is nothing to sneeze at.

That said, get enough Guinea pigs to buy the Norton, maybe we can get the ball rolling and have dealerships pop up in this country.
 
I've got my eye on the Nomad. I envision a taller windscreen and side bags on mine. But there will be some time before It is available here. I am hoping for good reviews of it in the UK.

Dealer support doesn’t mean anything to me. I live in Michigan and bought my Naked and Commando from California. Any issues I have I address and repair myself.
I agree that the Norton’s have a better overall build quality as far as metal vs plastic goes.

The Atlas has a 650cc 84 hp vs 1200 cc 96 hp for the triumph. The triumph also has way more torque. But also consider the Atlas weighs less. 392 pounds Vs the speed twins 432 pounds.
I’m not to concerned about a hp war.

But I like the components used on the Atlas better. Plus I like the thought of not seeing a Norton anywhere in my area.

Correct. But my point is, I don’t care for Japanese bikes, don’t care for the looks of the Indian FTR 1200, and absolutely no interest in anything Harley has to offer.
I do like the BMW R9T, my cousin has one and it’s a nice bike. But he has one lol.

The style of the Ranger/Nomad just don't do anything for me. If you want Norton on the tank then it would have to be one of these I guess but there an awful lot of similar styled bikes out there. If you like Triumph, want a superb 2-up machine with bags of power and street cred then the Rocket fits the bill ;)

The R nine T is a very nice bike. But despite what the press say about it being super characterful, after a 961, they’re a very dull ride. The pillion seat is a joke too!

They are in showrooms here, as of 1st March, I test rode one at the weekend and the performance is good - similar to a thruxton - not as much plastic as you might think and decent components. I ordered one after the test ride to replace my Sprint GT
Love the look of the Nomad but don’t want to wait 8-12 months or more for delivery

Actually, I was talking about the Speed Twin 1200 too, but brain fart made Street leave my fingertips.
I would have to see both. Only judging by the Norton that I have and the current Triumphs that are on the street and in the dealerships here in NY, the overall aesthetics and exterior components are far superior on the Norton. But since I've had only one of 4 summers where the Norton wasn't down for one reason or another, I'm a bit biased. Customer and dealership support mean a lot to me. I'm not a mechanic. I am however getting better at it with this Commando. If the Speed Twin is as nice as I think it is, I might pop for it.

They are nice bikes, if you like bikes that look like grasshoppers. I like plain old traditional styling. The Duc Scrambler is nice looking except for those multidirectional headers. The Griso is REALLY nice except for them trying to figure out where to mount the cooler and the exhaust. Not into those jugs nor the boxster Beemer either, however, spectacular motorcycles. Multistrad is too tall for my inseam and I wouldn't touch an MV if it were half price. It's not the bike, it's the company.
