What Year Did MKII Arrive?

I have a 961 Sport with 1/15 as the manufacturer's date. Is that a MKII? I've noticed that all the parts listed on the AF! web site, which seems to be the only US dealer that sells parts on-line, say they are suitable for a variety of 961 models, including the Sport MKII, but none of them ever mention a Sport model, without the MKII designation. I've searched the forum as best I can, and haven't found out how to tell the difference. Before I order gaskets and such, I'd like to be sure they will fit my bike. Any help appreciated.

Hi ya Ken , I ordered my bike February 2016 ,& picked it up the following month , a Mk2 SF ,I am pretty confident it was a very early Mk2 ,& of course it’s says MK 2 on the side panels .

All the gaskets and parts are the same and will fit . The real change comes with Euro4 (not in the engine but in ECU and ancillaries). The MK2 was a compilation of improvements over time to the MK1 which of course is no longer made. So , the MK1 developed into the MK2 . The closer your bike is to a 2016 model year , the more MK2 improvements it has like the clutch basket and cam gear timing marks etc.

Thanks, Guys. I was mostly worried about the primary cover gasket. I'm thinking I'll take a look at the clutch basket and ring gear, just to be sure the fasteners are tight, and maybe replace the balance gear spring.

Tony, is there a list available of the changes that were made for the MKII, particularly the engine changes? I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to some of the newer parts while I have the primary open.

No list I can get that's for sure. But I can say that my late 2014 build date Nov.2014 has all the improvements already installed. My ring gear was tight , new style clutch basket , my balance gear spring good etc. We installed a new split gear spring while in there of course. Cam good, lifters good , rocker shafts good , center main bearing support tight ... all with nearly 7000 miles on it. Of course I feel very good about now since I went through it with David Coote. I didn't have to replace the bearings but I wanted the best available because I am keeping this bike and plan to put LOTS of miles on it. My advice to you is to get in contact with David Coote and he can really advise you. Just PM me or Richard-7 .

May I ask why you left the CAT on, as I remember you have the short aftermarket pipes

I ordered mine in October 2016 and it arrived in New Zealand in November 2016.I was so excited to have it that I never noticed when I picked it up that it wasn’t a Mark 2. Checking out the VIN number codes showed it to be a 2015 model that was probably sitting in Australia. When I asked the factory about details of the VIN - silence. The dealers response was that I never stipulated that I wanted a Mark 2 - but I had just assumed it would be given that the new bikes being manufactured were Mark 2s.

This explains why you got the bike so quickly.
In my opinion you should at least get all upgrades for free or alternatively a reduction of the price for the MkI...

Thanks, Tony. That makes me feel better. Looking at the ring gear was my primary reason for wanting to pull the primary cover, although changing the spring was also a driver. I'm used to the mechanical noise now, and it doesn't really bother me, but it would still be nice to see if a new spring reduces it. Now I'm comfortable putting some more miles on before doing so. Maybe at the next oil change.
