Is the gearset & case on the 750 interceptor the same as the 350 Bullet ?

therefore fittable to a ' special ' of some displacement . ( the Bullet one ) .

Are the Indian ones made from good British Steel , as it were . Or would 100 Hp
at the dragstrip lead to tears and infamy .

Im presuming India Bullet Gearboxes arnt unobtainum , and for a makeshift set up
would be tolerable ?? . If it disentegrates other effects would make it senseless .

There were bloody great 1000 V Twin Enfields , was it about the same gearset & bearings ,
or are the little ones ( 350/500 a differant kettle of fish .

The Albion gearbox fitted to Redditch Bullets was about the worst thing there is about these bikes. It can be made to work ok but needs lots of attention. The Madras Bullets did not have anything better until about 2010/11. They also were not all the same for all years.
100 hp! You must be joking! The Indian Enfields are built in India using Indian steel. They seem to be a bit better now than they were when first imported into N. America, but still don't expect much if you build a performance engine and expect the gearbox to handle it.
Side valve Enfield V twins were prewar machines. They made about 25 hp. I would hope they updated and strengthened the gearbox over the next 70 years.

actually at somewhere I can sort out pictures to here . At the moment .

90 bore x 76 odd , 930 . got another at 80 stroke , - 2 on the bore , @ 1 litre .
Once I get the Disc Grider out . The Irons a bit hard for a hacksaw .
Thin Wall Iron isnt as heavy as youd expect . Alumn.'s damn tough too .
 
Ive never had a Bullet but I have an Inter. The gearbox is woefully inadequate in every way.
The one thing different I know is that the Inter has a sleeved mainshaft and the Indian one
for the single doesnt. I guess that means the Indian shaft breaks more slowly but wears out
faster.
The design of the box is odd and the execution crapulous. Oh, the materials are about the
hardness of lead turned up on worn out lathes with dull tools.
I currently use it as ballast under my work bench.

Please pardon the bad attitude. I is earned.

Well apart from that it really works well anchoring the bench.
They arent that expensive used. You should get one and tear it down
some rainy winter day for amusement and ....horror.
Perhaps Ill come by and give you mine to disembowel as I take photos of
your facial expressions.
 
I sold my Interceptor just before this post. I'll say this:

The transmission had a neutral finder because it needed it. I never had a bit of mechanical trouble with my Interceptor, a MK I 1/2, aside from leaks, and some primary chain/clutch stuff when I first got it. The transmission even shifted ok, unless you were even in the slightest bit of a hurry. Worst motorcycle transmission I ever tried, for certain. Loved the bike though. Owned it about 15 or 20 years.
 
Guy local to me commutes on a later 500 bullet. Generally pleased with the limited performance, but did say the original finish was poor, rust lifting paint off the frame, undercoat that seemed to be a mix of emulsion and polyfilla (!) Must say, though, on inspection it looked more substantial than the Interceptor I viewed last week, or was that an optical illusion because there's less of it?
 
I believe the later five speed gearbox will fit & is a lot better. Try emailing Hitchcocks for advice as they seem to be the R.E. experts.

As it turns out, the transmissions are probably pretty stout. Don Slinger supposedly used a stock transmission and clutch on his double engine Royal Enfield which was the first bike to get a land speed record over 200 mph at Bonneville without streamlining.

That said, he didn't have to shift very quickly, and in my experience, a Royal Enfield Albion box will not shift quickly.

 
Hitchcocks have their own 5 speed English designed & manufactured gearbox which is rather expensive at £3,100, but apart from looking like the Albion 'box is a total redesign with modern internals. I have one on my Big Head 612 Bullet. If I ever get it running I'll let you know what it's like.
 
I read in one of the classic bike mags a couple of years ago that a guy had made a very simple mod to his Albion box and it was transformed. Apparently it was a real trial and error process, but after about 12 removals, mods then refits he got it perfect. However he did it many years ago and he'd forgotten what he's done, so couldn't pass on the details - Dohhhh. It proves they can be improved though.

Could an AMC box be grafted on ?
