Recommend me a strobe timing light.

Cheap as chips online but want to avoid getting one that's a POS.
 
The one I have connects to the battery and clips on the HT lead
Don't know what make it is
 
Some strobes (such as my Gunson timing light) have an advance control but it isn't something you can use to time a Commando or any other British bike so don't pay extra in the belief that you are getting an additional feature as it must be set to zero.

I put a piece of tape on mine the dial on mine is too easily turned.

I removed the tape from mine to take that picture as it caught me out when I accidentally knocked it. :)

Edit: The term "caught me out" apparently may not be understood in the US so means the same as caught me unawares.

It was inexpensive when I bought it in 2015. I see that there are others that look the same and cost less. The interesting thing is that I've never changed the batteries since I put them in when I got it and it still is working fine.

Whatever you get, it's best not ot used the bike's battery to power it - that's why I bought self-powered.
 
I have always found the ones powered by the induction from the HT lead are nowhere as bright as those that have battery connections.
So... the latter is always my preference, especially as my eyes get older.

Yep that type were way too dull
You'd have to half kill yourself with the garage doors shut and lights off to see it!
