The bike is a Vincent engine in Norton featherbed frame. AJS 7R front forks and front wheel. Engine fitted with Goldstar Pistons, Vincent lightening cams. 1.1/2 inch GP Carburators, 7R racing seat, Ariel Arrow silencers with no baffles, we called it the Black Beast. You can see just below the seat a bulb hooter a legal requirement as an audible means of approach. This bike sounded like a spitfire in full flight. A super bike of its day probable speed of 150 mph. This bike is still alive and kicking and living in Northampton .

O.K. Egli , not f'bed .

1000cc rapide 1 1/4 inch su carbs Vincent Lightening cam shafts, Norton featherbed frame, alloy tank and racing seat, BSA Gold star Clip ons and Silencer, running on Castrol R.
I was 17 when I brought the bike in 1965 influenced by George Browns Nero as I was a member of Stevenage sprint club and attended many sprints at Duxford during the early sixties, although most of the parts were present it was only partially built which allowed me to finish the build to my own specification and once finished I rode it for 18 months.
The Norvin was a great bike to ride once you had mastered the starting proceedure, also not to ride to slowly in traffic as the bike was quite top heavy, I can remember falling off after running out of petrol whilst looking down to turn on the reserve tap, it was fairly quick from stand still and once rolling the torque came in and it would wheel spin in second gear in the wet, I can remember seing 135mph, this is the only picture I have and taken in 1966 the rider is a relation.

Thanks to Anthony Cox for this picture.

Nice assemblage of pics, Matt.
The difficulty that most Norvin builders face at some point is that a Vincent engine won't actually fit into a featherbed frame ? (most featherbeds, anyway = they are not all exactly the same).
Be interesting to know how some of the above were done ?
The explanation in there (in swahili?) looks comprehensive, but googles translator isn't...
Wonder what Glen will say ?

I will say that I want one, already have the cams bought for it (but that is all) I think I just started on another megaproject!

I would build a one off frame in stainless, make a little extra room here and there so that the Vincent motor will fit properly without looking as tho the engine is doing a wheelie. Maybe try to get the COG down an inch or two as well.

I dont think it would improve on the Glenli, be as light, stop as quickly or handle any better, but it is still a worthy project.
And I could spend ages working on it without spending much$, just borrow the engine from the Rapide again, other one this time, it deserves a rest!

You should take up a hobby, you seem to have way to much time on your hands

jean, that is something I have always wanted to do, take up a hobby. As soon as I get finished with this motorcycle stuff, I will look into it! :D

With less flywheel, yeah. LOL the 920 yamaha had lots of it.

A friend had a Norvin, Greg Duvall, RIP. I recall him out drag racing Gary Schumache on some kind of chambered Kawi triple - 500 or 750? - it wasn't a full 1/4 mile but it was uphill and that Norvin just walked away. Awesome torque. Twin Lightning heads, full tilt engine. I had a good seat, following in third place on my Commando, getting pulled by both of those bikes.

Even Hondas son wanted one and decided to build a Honda version, motor too. Apparently he also has a Black Shadow and is quite fond of it. His plan was to build this Vincent like Mugen(his company) and try to market them. The cost of construction was much to high tho, so only one was ever built.
I wonder if it has Vincent like torque or Honda like no torque lots of high rpm hp?

I'll take the Mugen MRV1000 over that POS Black Shadow, thank you very much.

Never heard of the MRV1000 before, thanks for the link, Worntorn.

We still have about three Norvins racing at historic events in Oz. Back in the sixties Arthur Pimm used to ride one in unlimited races against manx nortons and gold star BSAs. Later Bill Pound owned it and was just as devastating on it. But considering it was twice the capacity.... silly stuff, and it still happens today.

Strangely enough, I've seen it quoted that that "POS Black Shadow' (in several variants) is THE top selling model of H*nda worldwide - excluding postiebikes and stepthroughs, which are in a league of their own.

What does that tell you about how discerning buyers are ??
And what sells....

P.S. When you do the numbers, H*nda pumps out more bikes in one day than Nortons did a year.
That generates a lot of R&D funding.....

According to Pirsig / zen and the art of motorcycle maintanance . , ONE in Fifty Thousand has a I.Q. of over 170 . Theres an awful lot of mugs out there .
They even bought RD 350s . :P :D

Best Australian Norvin was recently sold by Doug Corish. It was raced very successfully by Eric Debenham back in the sixties in New South Wales :

I don't believe a Marshall Plan was used to rebuild British industry after WW2. The US was too intent on devolving the empire, and establishing its own global trade dominance. Even during WW2 there were limitations imposed on what the British could do with Lend Lease, although the Russians openly used it towards post war reconstruction. Australia has never had a serious motorcycle industry even though we went through a post war era of prosperity. We had a do-nothing conservative government which squandered the opportunity to give impetus to manufacturing. They were too busy fighting commies.
