Glenn's 850

The proper crimping tool for those Lucas connectors makes an amazing difference (as does a dab of dielectric silicone grease), not only to wire harness reliability, but also to mental health and karma in the shed !

Similar story with regards to a correct HT leads crimping tool. I only bought one recently after decades of inventive bodgery with HT connectors. It’s a revelation !

Hi Mike, it turned out well. Good job. Glenn would be happy. I can’t believe it’s been 2 years already. Stay well mate
cheers

Very nice. Another thank You for the distraction... Your friend would be proud.

Thanks guys,

Got some updates. The bike ran well but shifted like a bunch of rocks.
Seeing how it came with a box full of new bushings, gaskets etc I assumed the box needed going through.
Especially since the kicker shaft is knackered.
Also, suspecting the sloppy rearsets isn't helping I decided to install the stock stuff, before going into it.
Bingo, shifts fine.
The previous pictures with the Silver/Blue tank and Corbin are off another project . I resinstalled the Silver tank, Stickered it and the side covers.
Installed the stock seat, new 'Daytona Touring Bars'. From a box of bits installed the stock fork ears, chrome headlight, nicer winkers.
Installed a set of Koni's from my stash. Sourced a grab rail.
Went through some tuning issues. Currently running a Mk3 Boyer with repaired leads, new 'Lucas' coils, or whoever they are.
Non resisitor leads with resistor plugs, Amal Premiers with older floats, 19 pilot. (Considering going back to 17's)
Installed a NYN sump breather. Runs great!!!, One/two kick wonder..
Here's how she currenty looks.

Running great.. Went for about 50mi canyon run to get ready for the upcoming Hanson Dam non ride on the 1st.
Got back and was greated with a spider web of goo on the rear wheel.
Traced it to melted cush rubbers.

The pictures are pretty much after/during the clean up. Didn't get a picture of the mess before hand.
Traced it to an overheating drum. I posted about it on another thread. Didn't have any issues till I spaced out the drum with the #21 shims.
Not sure that's the cause but there is an overheating issue with the drum.
It is all back together but still overheats. So now it sits till I get time.
Someone has a sig that says 'Weekends are never free with NVT.' How apropros.

Hi Mike,

I just went through that on my 750. The dummy axle and bearing retaining circlip had popped out allowing everything to move. The brake plate was rubbing and getting hot and in turn melted the rubbers. I decided to ditch the dummy axle setup and go with one of Don's one piece axles. I think its a superior setup.

Hope all is well. Wish I was going the Hansem Damn ride too.

Cheers
Jerry

Hi Jerry, I saw that post and was kind of hoping that was it. Nada, upon teardown, everything was in place.
I ordered up some new cush's, 2-sets, felts retainers etc. Glenn had one piece axle stashed in a box.
Reassembled it all with the one piece, a little more challenging with the continous, non master link chain.
Drum was very very hot to the touch after a little round the block sprint. For some reason I have a lazor thermometer.
The drum was at 175f, the disc 112f. This was not immediatey after, about 20 mins. Ambient was 86f in garage.
Not sure what all that means at this point. As D/D says, more research needed.

Interesting, let us know what you find.

Response #18 for the write up and fix.
