1973 850 Rebuild

Preemptive sorry about running this thread off the rails Jerry.

I had a 96 996S with a Termignoni headers back exhaust on it for a few years. It was quieter (lower tone) than my little 750 Norton with my version of a BUB pipe. I should be putting FCRs on the little twin this weekend. For grins I think I'll put the competition tip on the end of the BUB pipe and see what happens. Should be a real Sunday crowd pleaser in our quiet sleepy Seattle neighborhood.

It’s a copy of the pipe designed by Steve Maney. Made in NZ by Mike aka ‘brooking850’ on this forum, as far as I know he‘s still making them.

Its very well made, definitely worth contacting Mike if you want to go a bit ‘hot rod’...
Yes, I've been in communication with the maker of the pipe above. Still awaiting on his response about $$$ and shipping.

It's OK to go "off the rails". Yes, I've been in communication with the maker of the pipe above, awaiting on his response about $$$ and shipping. Should hear this morning. The pipes that came with my bike were 100% rusted through. Per Eddies suggestion, I'll be staying away from making my own or the BUB pipe and it's idiosyncrasies. Delivering the rest of my engine to JC in Pueblo next week.
The bike had been sitting since 1980 and many parts are missing, so I'm wrapped around the axle dealing with acquiring a myriad of nit noid hardware resulting in my U.S. dollars finding it's way (most preferably) to the UK. That being stated, are the forks sold by Andover manufactured in the U.K. ?
Thanks for the discussion!

Received a quote from the pipe vendor. Not surprised they were pricey. I gagged on the shipping
Found a set of used scarred POS Dunstall pipes on Ebay for $500

Too bad. I have a JC ported FA head and a Webcam 312a from him that i use with Mike's pipe. Love it.

You bought those? Seriously?!

Exactly what is it you don’t like about stock pipes and peashooters?

Those old Dunstalls mount in the same way, with the same hardware, they’re just uglier, older, and usually pretty badly made...

No, I did not buy them.............just getting acquainted with what's out there

Depending on your desire for pillion capacity etc, the stock set up can be neatened up some. These dinky offset mounting plates from AN help to tuck whole set up in nicely too...

Hope it's not bad forum etiquette to depart from the intended topic of this thread.
While I'm awaiting engine parts and machining................regarding the split clamp mod for the swing arm. At this stage of disassembly and using the purchased swing arm kit.
Is there anything wrong with drilling into the 2(ea) swing arm shaft clamps at the flat locations and tapping to 1/4" x 28? The clamp and shaft are tapped to 1/4"x28 and the shaft functions as a nut. Seems more secure to me.

That is quite normal and its your thread to do as you wish.

There is no need to machine a flat in the clamp, all I did was counterbore the top face to suit a brass washer.
Most likely the flat is done because it is easier. (I also did not want open holes so made my own being cheap with 2 x 6 mm and 1 x 8 mm fasteners)

The thrust fastener pushes on the spindle (at the flats) via the drilled holes in the cradle tube.
The clamp being full circumference is self supporting under that applied pressure.

There I go again over thinking things.
No, although I can change the thread title if you like?
Thanks! but no thanks
we can keep everything in one place (unlike my basket-case)
that being the said, what are your opinion's on the upper head steady (for lack of better words, isolastic)
Are the stock one's sufficient or is there now a preferred, more popular version that does the job, not costing its weight in gold. I know they're out there.
