1967 Norton Atlas main bearings

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the bronze/ brass knobs on an FAG super blend roller bearing on one side of the roller cage are for? One side but not the other. The way the bearings came packaged is that the inner race markings were on the same side as these knobs and the outer race markings which, because of the orientation of the lipped inner race means that these knobs face away from the crank in the case. Does it matter which way the bearing goes in the case?

Its good practise to put the outer into the case so the inner goes into it from the same direction it was in the box it was packed in. But is not critical and not worth changing even if it was possible to work that out.
