Old Britts – Norton Drum Brake Performance Kit
Download the complete PDF version using the green download button at the top right of this page for detailed Old Britts information covering the Norton Drum Brake Performance Kit and its individual parts. This technical article explains the purpose of the high-performance front drum brake modification, identifies every component supplied in the kit and reproduces the original Norton Service Release No. N74 issued in March 1972 for all Commando models.
The performance kit was introduced to stiffen the two-leading-shoe front brake assembly and improve braking performance by tying the brake cams and pivot pins together in a fixed relationship through a support plate. The article lists the complete kit contents, including the support plate, long and short pivot pins, expander cams, set screws and tab washers, together with individual part number information.
Further sections explain the brake plate conversion process, including removal of the original shoes, springs, expander cams and pivot pins, fitting the revised parts, securing the stiffening plate and locking the tab washers into position. Old Britts also adds practical workshop notes on removing the riveted short pivot pin, using a 1/2-inch drill, pressing the replacement pin into place and forming the rivet securely with drift CD-0003.
