961 Norton – Changing Standard Handlebars to Clip-On Bars
Download the complete PDF version using the green download button at the top right of this page for a detailed Norton 961 handlebar conversion guide created by Richard Coote. This illustrated workshop manual covers the process of changing from standard handlebars to clip-on bars, including removal of the controls and bar clamps, front suspension support, top triple tree clamp removal, clip-on installation and final control positioning.
The guide explains two ways to support the motorcycle during the work, including removing the exhaust and jacking beneath the engine or using a jack under the catalytic converters. It also notes that OEM clip-on bars require USD forks. Clear photographs identify the bar ends, throttle mechanism bolts, clutch and brake lever clamps, switchgear screws, dash bolts, triple tree nut, fork clamp bolts and ignition or steering lock fasteners that must be handled during the conversion.
Further sections cover installing the clip-ons with their dowels correctly aligned to the top triple tree clamp, carefully refitting the aluminium steering stem nut, centering the stud before final tightening and setting the controls so the throttle moves freely. The guide also explains throttle cable routing for clip-on bars, bar-end or mirror installation, and left-side control positioning where clutch line adjustment or reservoir bracket correction may be needed.
