Carbon Wheels on ABS Norton 961

This makes sense , seeing that the bike will already have ABS. So is it just a matter of making the trigger disc fit maybe this is where the problem lies , probably it doesn't just bolt up/line up . Vernon mentioned the disc bowed or misshapes itself somehow. What is not clear is why , seeing that if the same brake disc bolts up why not the ABS trigger disc ? The trigger disc is on the outboard side of the brake disc .
Exactly, the stock trigger is mounted on the disc, not the wheel, not on the spindle where it would effect spacers, etc.

Hence I cannot see what the issue is.

Can't you just machine 4 washers to sit under the disc bolt holes to elevate the disc just enough to avoid the lip on the wheel?

Shimming out the trigger disc would have a knock on effect with sensor air gap for starters, and possibly clearance concerns with the caliper carrier. Just turn down the hub to clear, wouldnt take much to do that.

This subject came up again recently. For a bike with so little (read no) opportunity to enhance performance, beyond fitting better tyres, it warrants further discussion for those interested I think.

With the number of 961’s increasing considerably, my guess is that there could be scope to engage with BST and/or Rotobox to make it happen.

Made a brief enquiry with Rotobox (cos’ why not!) - they appear interested however would need spec’s of course. No idea what interest there would be amongst the Mk2/SP crowd to take another run at this?

For MK1 owners at least, the Rotobox wheels appear to be available now - if they fit the Dominator, would they not also fit the Mk1 Commando (not at all sure)? Options in the below ‘Configure’ link. Select ‘Norton Dominator’.

Thoughts?

So... for a 961, are these little gems for aesthetics only?
How much for a pair of these things?
Cheers

You'd have to pay me 6K to fit those god awful ugly wheels to my 961. The BST carbon wheels make more sense to me.. better looking and better made. For my money, a pair of Dymag UP7X wheels make more sense for a road bike.. they're British too.

I prefer the look of the BST wheels also, although I don’t mind these - not as elegant as the BST wheels though, without the swept back spokes.

Not sure we can say that the BST wheels are better made - Rotobox look like a professional outfit, manufacturing high end kit.

As we know, Norton don’t offer BST wheels for the 961 SP and they don’t appear to be listed on BST’s website (for the Mk1). According to above posts BST also don’t sound very interested in the proposition - may be wrong now Norton have started selling more 961’s.

On the plus side it appears if Mk1 owners want carbon wheels they can still get em’. If a Mk2/SP owner wants a set then there’s some work to do. Looks like Rotobox is up for it though - it appears they modified an existing wheel set to fit to just one guys Dominator.

Hello all,

Haven’t been here for a long time…

I have contacted ROTOBOX a year ago and sent them my 2020 Dominator 961 Euro 4 ABS original wheels and they made the carbon wheels for me so now they are available FOR ALL Nortons 961 with ABS.

I took the Bullet wheels in dark gold color.
I fitted a 190 rear tire on which you can also fit on your stock wheel without a problem.

The wheels are beautiful and totally insane, and the riding and handling is 1,000% better.

You can check the wheels and my Dominator restomod and engine upgrades here:

That is one unique Dommie ND!! Great result with the carbon wheels - that opens up the 4 styles that Rotobox do for all of the 961’s, which is great news. If you haven’t already done so, it would be good to notify the guys over on the FB site.

Agreed, they really do transform the handling. It’s difficult to describe unless you’ve experienced it. Stick some pictures up on ‘Pictures’ thread👍.

Thanks Stephen!

I think that from all the 4 styles that Rotobox do the Bullet style fits the 961 best as it is like spokes... The other ones have more volume and will make the 961 look very heavy.

I'm active on the FB group but I still haven't notify anyone or published it as I first needs to know if the ABS wheels will fit the non ABS bikes.
*We know that the non ABS wheels will not fit the ABS 961 BUT I'm sure that the ABS wheels will fit the non ABS 961.*
We need to figure it out so everyone could enjoy these amazing wheels...
@Stu Bodycote Can you please check it and try to put the ABS wheels on a non ABS 961?(We are talking about it for two years already🤣)
Cheers✌

I still do not understand exactly why none ABS wheels will not fit an ABS bike.

Does anyone know ??

Please don’t just say ‘coz of the ABS’!! Exactly which parts of the ABS system are the issue and why…?

Do the ABS wheels have some kind of rotational speed sensor built in as part of a system to detect when lock-up is imminent ?
If this is the issue then surely the system (magnets or whatever) could be reproduced on a non-ABS wheel - no?

I don’t know.
The only one who can solve this issue for good is Stu as he have both non ABS and ABS in his shop.

The triggers are bolted to the discs, they don’t impact wheel spacing etc. Hence I can’t see what the issue is ?

There must be a reason… I just can’t work it out…

Not sure, but was the question not answered above @ #62 - #64? Can’t really tell as the video Stu posted @ #62 is no longer viewable.
