Time for Trixie to Go Under the knife

I put the air impact wrench on while holding the sprocket with a gloved hand. Off she came. Maybe lucky. I put it back on with the same method.
The air impact has torque settings that are very close when checked against a torque wrench.

I would have done likewise but didn't have a socket that would clear the maishaft.

The scary thing would be using an impact and not knowing you were dealing with left handed threads. " the PO must have used red loctite, better get the 3/4 gun"

No red loctite, just me cranking the nut counterclockwise with a 2' long wrench. I had to put clockwise pressure on the nut and smack the end of the wrench with a brass hammer to break it loose. That was after I barked my knuckle trying to use muscle torque to break it loose.

I've been there...and also keep a roll of electrical tape near by to stop the bleeding.

Yes I'm still living from boxes to a certain extent after moving. I had a Band Aide in my wallet but my thumb was a bit greasy. The Band Aide didn't want to stick but a wrap of electrical tape secured it nicely.

I pulled a real stunt on Wednesday. I replaced the front iso on my FLHTP and you're supposed to torque the mounting bolts with the motor idling, so I put a block under the kick stand to get it semi level, start it up, climb under the right side for more clearance and proceed to torque. Everything was fine until the torque wrench got to about the 11 o'clock position and that's when the torque wrench over came the kickstand pressure on the block of wood and over she came, all 800 lbs of her with my arms still under the bike...The front crash bar landed on my right forearm and pinned me with the engine just idling away. The right floorboard smacked me in the nose, luckily floorboard hinge pivoted freely, so my nose is still attached.

Not really, the sprocket is only held with a gloved hand. Even if you got the direction wrong, it wouldn't matter.

Hey my man , don't forget the new sprocket fits with the chamfered side of the nut towards the new sprocket.
Also with any nut , shock hit is better to get a release than any wrench pressures.

Yes. A rattle.gun.is also worth the price of admission, as Glenn's approach shows. I use my electric one often now. Tres bien.
 
I cut a deep socket in half and welded a piece of black pipe in the middle. Don’t think I have ever seen one deep enough to buy over the counter, but I really didn‘t look that hard.

I'll still go for the gloved hand and a quick braaap with the gun on this one.
If you do not have an air impact, the lock method above is perfect.

Just ordered the deep well socket linked in a post above.

I use my air impact as well as my 1/4' drive air ratchet (with 3/8" adaptor) as much as possible.

Everyone told me how hard it would be to pull the engine sprocket, requiring heat, etc. I quick blast with the air impact on my puller popped the sprocket right off.
