I need a bit of help with a commando front brake caliper - the bleed thread is shot but hopefully it can be drilled and recut for a new bleed nipple. Does anyone know of someone in France who could do this for me? I’m in Dept 17 but can travel or post.
cheers

Pretty much any “machine shop” should be able to do it , make certain before you proceed ,you have another larger bleed nipple in your hand , for the machinist to use .... he should be able to tell you which size you will need once he has had a look ....

Hi Keefe , I’m in 53. May have someone near us that may be able to help. If you are stuck give us a shout. Bit of a distance, guess you’d have to post.

How bad are the threads?

1. If not too bad, you may be able to get by with some PFTE (teflon) tape or lube
2. Somewhat bad, you may be able to retap it with the same size and pitch
3. Completely buggered, two options. Drill and tap for an insert with the same size and pitch as the original bleed screw, or drill and tap (no insert) for a larger diameter bleed screw. i would try an insert if it was me

1 and 2 are easy DIY. A steady hand and a vise could get you through 3 depending on your confidence.

im looking but not having much success - plenty of farm gear repair shops but they tend to replace or weld!

Looks like it’s had an insert before and now part of it has started to crumble - needs drilling out but size of hole to clean metal will be key.
thanks for the response

53! about as far away as you can get . I’ll keep looking but might get back to you if I continue to draw blanks.
cheers

Question: These numbers in France, what are they? Do you not have counties with names?
Just wondering.

Hi,
I'm in Bordeaux, might be able to help.
Jaydee, Bordeaux is 33.;)
Cheers.

20+ years ago I had the same problem. I took the caliper apart to inspect it then drilled a parallel path into the the chamber and fitted a new nipple. Good as new ever since.

No, but if they do work in those types of cars with any regularity they should be able to do this, since is fairly straightforward.

Keeping it clean and the swarf out is key.

Helicoil? There are other variations on the theme. This can be done in a basic workshop with ordinary skills. A bit of Googling and you could probably come up with a solution along these lines. Sometimes just getting someone else to do it makes sense though. In the UK there are loads of places could do it. I just had Steve Maney redo some exhaust port threads.

I had one break off... hard, hard, hard metal. Anyway buggered the thing and tried to go to next size up, but couldn't match the taper for the nipple to seat properly, so tossed up my hands and bought a replacement caliper. Got lucky and only had to clean up & out and go with it.
