Incoming - Aluminum Fuel Tank for my Dominator

I'm more into the paint. As gorgeous as those polished tanks are on their own, to me, they make the bike look disjointed. Not bad, mind you, but not as elegant. If I wanted an ally tank, I'd get it painted or change the rear cowl to something that would match the polished look. I'm with FE. Lord knows his bike is still tops.

You mean like this but with black filling in the gold boarder?
I too thought of paining that area in. But I also thought about putting the black tank back on because I like the menacing all black look, I just can’t let the aluminum tank sit around not being used for the cost.
If I were to do it again, I’d pass on the urge of the aluminum tank and just keep the black tank.

Yes Scott, just what I have imagined. Unfortunately it is difficult to envisage without seeing it in the flesh and I agree that on the black bike the tail may need to be painted as well.

I may stick with the black and spend my money elsewhere. Rizoma CR mirrors and brake reservoirs are next up. You mention polished clock surround, foot controls and top yoke. Sounds expensive and they are not listed on the Norton site as far as I can tell? Did they cost an ‘arm and a leg’, or was it both legs!

Regards.

Steve

Lucky You !
Well the galaxy gray comes shipped on the Naked along with the dreadful long pipes.
The brushed aluminum tank and megaphones come in a separate box.

I only separately bought the polished aluminum tank for my commando.
Would I buy it again?
Nope!
But to late now, maybe down the road I’ll put the sexy black n gold back on the Commando and see what the polished tank looks like on the Naked.

I purchased the following items in polished for my commando.
Top and bottom yolk
Dash
Foot controls
Both heel plates
Both handle bar clamps

I wish I could remember what I paid but that was over 2 years ago.
I’d contact Rob at the factory and have him give you a current price.
Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

As beautiful as the aluminum tank is, if I were to do it again.
I’d keep my black painted tank on. That’s just my opinion.
I wish my commando had the black engine also. Something about all black looks menacing and mean.

I love the black Dominators as well, but the Naked was my choice Once I seen a picture of it. To me, the Naked is perfect and raw. I’m glad Norton left the frame bare and not painted silver.

Why not a two tone paint ? Leave some of the alloy showing . Of course it has to be painted and costly , but that would be very cool . I want the alum. tank because of the 3+ liters of extra fuel. With the gas mileage I can get with this thing I can go 180 miles before filling up again. That's a huge benefit when you're taking long trips and out in the hills and country. I also carry a 2 quart plastic fuel can on the bike and can be more confident to stretch those tanks !

Painting it isn’t a problem for me, my dad owns a body shop. Just never got around to really doing it. I also thought of using black vinyl computer cut to the shape to see if I really like it. If not I could easily remove it.

If you allow, I’ll post the price here, you sent it to me via PM at the time...

Hello Again Voodoo , If you plan on keeping your Norton's for a long time , then I would keep the Alum, tank(s) . Here's why : There may be a limited lifespan on the plastic/nylon tanks . When the time come that your plastic tank fails , you will have the alum tanks to fall back on . And as most will agree , the Alum should be a life long gas tank. Get it painted / decals applied clear coat and don't look back ! This is my plan , I will use my plastic until it fails then switch to Alum ..

And you have an extra fuel capacity!

Please do.
Not sure if or how much the prices may have changed.
Voilà :
Polished top and bottom yolks
Polished top nut
Polished handle bar risers
Polished handle bar clamps
Polished gauge holder
Polished heel plates
Polished foot controls (rear brake and shifter)
Polished pegs
Polished gear box filler plug
For everything listed above I (Voodoo) paid $2553.83 US dollars and that also includes shipping from England to USA.

If you haven't sealed the vent in the monza cap then I strongly suggest you do so now! Speaking from experience!
I took the monza cap apart and found a nice little closed grommet that fits perfect in the vent hole and when the cap is put back together the grommet gets sandwiched between the two metal discs holding the sealing washer so it can't fall out. Filled the tank to the brim, had a run out today and no spilled fuel :)

OK... I decanted 14 litres from my plastic tank leaving behind around 250cc, so 14.25L capacity to bottom of inner neck.

I put all 14 litres into the ally tank + another 3-1/2 litres, so 17.5L capacity plus still room for a little more but didn't want to test the Monza cap vent at it's extreme.

I have just switched tanks so did the decant exercise in reverse. My ally tank was full but not to the brim, maybe room for another 0.5L+. Got slightly different figures, I managed to put 15L into the plastic tank to the bottom of the filler neck then took another 2.25L out of the alloy tank.... so alloy tank holds at least 1/2 imp gal more. It wasn't scientific but if the alloy tank was filled to brim on sidestand (filler cap is on the right side and not central) then it will give you another 25 miles range, maybe a little more.

When I got mine the tank had 800 miles worth of wear/rub, was pretty nervous about re brushinng the whole thing but once I got into it was actually quite easy and a pleasure to do, came out like it was straight out of the factory. Anybody have any leads on new Norton tank stickers? would be handy to have a spare set onboard.
P.S. carefull with the Monza gas caps, they come unlocked and open up real easy in a accident, Honda stopped using them in 72 after a load of law suits. I built a bike for a customer and fitted one, 2 days later he hit a deer, bike flipped over, monza opened up and dumped the fuel, few sparks and it was a fireball, got the vidio somewhere..... We use the british customs one nowadays, its a machined cap for the same look but fits onto the OEM plastic gas cap on the Triumphs. It might be close to fitting on top of the Norton screw
cap, Will have to check.

That would be great if you could check . Those BC gas cap covers look great. It would be a shame for us to buy it and it can't fit. Also , Could you tells us more about the belt drive kits you sell , like pros and cons of belt drive. This is more for others than myself because I don't need to be sold on belt drives , I think they're great.

This is what Raphi has been saying from the beginning . 2 to 3 liters more in the Alum tank. Now you are thinking it is closer to 2 liters more than 3 L ? Either way it is more gas albeit just 2.25 L more. I have been able to drive my plastic tank down to 3.5 USG when out on a trip and pull in for gas it took 3.5 USG to fill it. I would be hesitant to do this on a regular basis without back up gas on board . I think this is close to the running out point , I would not venture further with out reserve fuel on board. How many miles you can go is debatable on this 3.5 gallons. 125 miles is very easy with lots of full throttle and high steady speeds. Getting to 150 miles takes more attention , but is very easy at lower speed driving . If you can live with 60 to 65 mph indicated getting to 150 miles is a breeze . At this slow speed I can get 50 MPG or more (I have gotten 53 MPG USG using this method) making 160 miles range quite easily achievable . Now you add the 2.25 L on top of this and presto 185 miles to the tank (maybe more) ? So you are thinking that the Alum tank is 4 Gallons usable ?

I never run my tanks down so difficult to say what the usable capacity is. It certainly holds at least 2.5L more and the external underside appearance/shape is similar to the plastic tanks. There isn't any kind of balancer pipework between left/right or front/back so whether the internal cavities allow more or less fuel to get to the fuel pump I don't know, Raphi probably has more experience of this.

Hi Tony. Yes its on my list to look at that gas cap to see if it could be made to fit when I get a min. The Belt drives we sell are made by our freinds in Italy Free Sprits, We sell the odd one here and there but not many. Not a big fan of them myself as I like a well serviced drive chain. Probably be good if you go to work and back everyday and dont want to deal with a chain. I dont think it would be anywhere near fitting the Norton, bolt patterns, Drive shaft splines clearance etc.
