"What's the big deal, mine does that" I hear you mutter.... well...

my bike hasn't been on charge for a full 7 days, no trickle charge, nada! A BIG BIG thank you Rob Jameson for your in-depth knowledge of the history of the 961, and your parts supply history and for putting in the unscheduled time and effort to diagnose and rectify the problem!

My lithium battery was put on 'store' after I came home from it's annual service. The following day I checked the battery voltage and it was 13.33V on my own meter. I then put battery on 'charge' and it took voltage up to 14.3V. I disconnected charger and monitored the voltage each day. The voltage fell back to 13.4V in the first 24 hours then slowly dropped over the next 6 days to 13.28V tonight. Volts looked good BUT did it still have the amperage? I turned ignition on, bikes voltmeter said 13.2V, headlight was blazing, one press of starter and she fired up immediately. I let her warm up for a few minutes until revs dropped down to her usual 1200 tickover, in which time the bikes voltmeter climbed rapidly to 14.7V. Me a very pleased chappie to say the least :)

So, what was the root cause in the end...?
My speedometer.

Rob mentioned that the parasitic draw can be a bit variable but was surprised mine was as high as 19mA and would take a look at my bike as it was in the workshop. I mentioned one of the quirks that my speedo had displayed randomly over the year and his eyes lit up, he recalled that an earlier speedo (pre-MkII?) exhibited the exact same issues so the supplier upgraded the internals and they hadn't seen the same quirk since, until I mentioned it. Rob tested my parasitic drain at 23mA then went and got a new speedo from parts and put it on my bike and the drain was in the microAmps. Sorted.

And a great case for the benefits of taking the bike to the factory for servicing !
 
Interested to hear Mark that your bike idles above the 1200 rev mark initially and drops to idle. On starting, my 2015 CR settles on 1200 revs immediately and stays there! Slightly different set-up I suppose. A modern Japanese bike we would expect to start and idle exactly the same as the next bike. The quirks of the hand built machine methinks.

I think these bikes are awesome whatever the quirks. Long live Norton.

Steve if my memory serves me it was only after 500 mile service with decat pipes and new map that it adopted this starting pattern. 1500rpm at the start up and for about as long as it takes me to put helmet and gloves on. By the time I am about to pull out my yard and on to the road she is already dropping to closer to 1300 rpm and for the rest of the ride she reliably idles at 1200. Having said that she did stall on me at a junction the last ride out but she's never done that before.
 
Got you Mark, my guess is depending on ECU/Pipe setup and other variable most bikes will be slightly different; before I had the pipe opened up and changed ECU mine would barely tick over at all.

I am completely relaxed about the quirks of this bike and I think we all accept that there are a few ‘design flaws’ included! I appreciate the uniqueness and feedback I get from the machine and suspect I am unlikely to go back to a mass produced vanilla variant!

Happy days, Mr Smug comes visiting. Nice to have that gremlin made homeless. I concur with your assessment of factory servicing. Mine just received its four year annual but would not idle when started. Rob diagnosed an issue with the throttle bodies, so they are off for calbration. A frustrating two week wait until I get it back, but nice to know it will be 'right' when its returned.

I think they rate their calibs?

I'm not sure if that means something? It was a genuine question.

I thought the throttle bodies were setup in-situ using the diagnostic software to set the TPS position and the adjustment screw. Is there something else that can only be adjusted away from the bike?

I'm sure Rob would be able to explain.
 
my guess is the balance of the two butterfly's and the base line throttle setting. with this set than you would set the TPS.

Thanks, I can understand the butterfly balance, although I wonder why that would have changed, unless it wasn't set properly in the first place. How would you know if they were out of sync?

Is the baseline throttle setting determined by the adjustment screw? With the SC ECU this is set with the throttle bodies in-situ, using the diagnostic software and the instructions provided by SC.

Just trying to get a better understanding here, as the factory had a number of attempts at fixing the tickover issue on my bike and it still remains. This was pre-Rob, so it would be helpful if he could chip in on this.
 
What do they actually do when they calibrate the throttle bodies?
If the throttle valves are not closing/opening together , they can fix that with an adjustment/alignment. Sometimes just a slight twist of the shaft is all it is. I would leave it to an expert , those little screws on the throttle plates falling out would give me nightmares . And I have enough of those already.!

Hello Comet , What kind of tick over problem are you having ? High idle when hot ? Intermittent high idle ? Bike kills at a stop sign ?
