Any type of oven is preferable to using a torch. I know that Mick Hemmings uses one, but unless you really know your way around a torch you are asking for it. The issue is slow and even heating. You can possibly warp the things. You might want to leave the valve guides to a shop you trust anyway. There's a chance that an oversize might be needed and you won't be able to tell if you don't have the necessary tools to find out. That and the fact that the seats are probably going to need cutting afterward makes it a more straightforward job if you let the shop handle it from start to finish.

Phew, I'm so glad I got rid of my wife....I use the oven almost as much for engine parts as cooking :)

And I do cook a lot!!, but with 2 race motors to keep on top of, sometimes I just have to go hungry :)

Ended up buying a Milwaukee heat gun. Worked just fine during my transmission stip down to remove bearings. Also bought some 250 temp sticks to use when I heat the case to reinstall bearings, just to make sure I am heating it enough.

I would advise other members to think very carefully before attempting to claim joint (sorry!) ownership of the oven?

As I can guess what the reply is likely to be "well...if the oven is half YOURS....then you can do HALF the COOKING!"

And if the oven is half yours....your Commando is half theirs!

Is it worth the risk?

It was never a big deal in my house...
“I’ve got to use the oven for an hour, for engine parts. I’ll open the windows, the paint smell will be gone in no time.”

“Ok”

Probably becsuse she saw me do it since we first were together.

Torch is good for singular parts and bearings, rocker shafts etc, but I would definitely use an oven or grill to heat the head prior to pressing valve guides in or out.

I picked up a large convection oven at a yard sale for $20, works perfect, doesn’t take up much space. It’s big enough for a head, or half an engine case at a time, also works great for baking paint.
