1972 Combat w/21-41 Sprockets & Wide Ratio Gearbox ??? (2013)

Reading up on the good the bad & the ugly and then checking the list of the notoriously bad things you don't want to find in your Combat Commando I did a tooth count of my sprockets to see if It had the low gearing that is said to have been used on Combats. What I found was a surprise. 21 tooth g/b and a 41 tooth wheel. I believe this is the way it came new as there is no sign of it being taken apart before and it only has 3000 miles on it. Then I found that the gearbox has a W stamped after the VIN number. I know that the old Triumphs had a WR stamped on them for Wide Ratio as I have collected a few to use with street bikes to take advantage of the low first gear for good take offs with a long ratio sprocket combo for smooth freeway cruising at lower RPM's. Anyone know if Commando boxes were ever stamped with a W for wide ratio???

The letter stamp was a factory identification symbol that enabled them to keep track of production changes.

There is no known list of what each letter represents but it is unlikely that "W" refers to "wide ratio".

OK, I did find a post by a guy that said he had a C stamped on his box, but had standard gears inside. Mine is coming apart to get the layshaft bearing upgrade so I'll find out for sure then.

My boxes have...A, E, N, Y, L
I have put a 21 T sprocket on my combat, but I have always seen them original as 19T.

I'd be happy to go with LES' explaination or

Whats wrong with the guy that put it together? Could have been a gal?

My combat has an “A” stamped on the gearbox. I read somewhere the later combats were de-tuned and fitted at the factory with 21 tooth gearbox sprocket. A 207xxx is around 6000 numbers later than mine so is one of the later ones.
