For those of us that are now grandparents there has been a new curse thrown down upon us that is worse than anything that Joe Lucas could have ever devised. My wife and I get a painful dose on almost a daily basis. It's the torment of the new "Baby Shark" madness. Our two grandchildren must spend all of their waking hours dreaming up cute little skits to go along with this painful phenomenon. When I hear the "ding" on my wife's computer notifying us that we have a brand new video of those two darlings having yet again walked with Satan in creating a new shark ditty I don't know where to jam the ice pick. Into my eyes so that I don't have to witness our beloved little ones who have willingly gone down the slippery slope into shark worship or into both eardrums to protect my sanity from the catchy shark song. Crap! I am getting to be an old curmudgeon just as my wife has claimed.

I wasn’t aware of this.

Thank you for enlightening me to a new low-point in homosapien development...

Sometimes, it is well that ex-daughter-in-law has taken the grand kids 1500 miles away.

Unfortunately distance doesn't protect us from videos sent via email or live snap chats. There are times when snail mail or telephones s a way of communicating were an unknown blessing. Our grandkids are about 2000 miles away and most of the time I feel blessed to be able to have such modern ways to keep in the loop but there are other times when it's just downright painful. Thank you Pinkfong

Ice pick anyone? Or maybe a pop rivet stem?

I have three baby step granddaughters who are with me every second week because of a custody arrangement. I would never wish them to be somewhere else. They give me a purpose in life. Whatever they grow up to be, will be an expression of my own immortality. Because during my first marriage, I was always working and studying, I barely knew my own kids. These days I rarely ever see any of them. Kids learn a tremendous amount from the example set the adults around them. When I talk to kids, I always try to help them think clearly and rationally. Even with my own three kids, there is no way anybody could ever get at them. They can turn any argument around and see it from all possible directions.

QUICK - WHERE'S THE ICE PICK, WHERE'S THE ICE PICK FOR PITY'S SAKE!!!!

Curiosity got the better of me (Oh, come on - it can't be that bad!)...
...it can, it is and now forms part of my collection of horrific memories that I wish I could unhear/see!!

Well said. As super annoying as this video is, my wife and I are not only memorizing it, we are choreographing a simple dance routine to present to the Gkids. Old people can play at this game too

We just got a video of our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter doing a dance while in the bathtub to this crime against humanity song. Now I've got Baby Shark earworm issues.

The thing is that a baby shark will use its cuteness to nuzzle up close then it'll rip your face off! The song works in much the same way.

The Scroll and Delete buttons are very underrated, I use them a lot.

My son or his girlfriend send them directly to my wife who then excitedly shares them with me. Usually over and over and over again. I smile and insert all of the appropriate grandpa comments all the while I'm shriveling up inside. We went through it when our kids were little with Care Bear, Cabbage Patch Kids, Rainbow Bright, etc. tapes that we "enjoyed" on our many road trips. As they got just a bit older it was Culture Club, Milli Vanilli, and the worst of the lot, Michael Jackson! I snapped one trip after listening to Thriller for over 200 miles. This was in my restored 66 F-250 truck with no AC and the 4 of us crammed into the one bench set available in that standard cab beauty. Out the window went that tape. Crunch! A mail truck smashed it to bits. As close to a divorce as I ever want to get.

I was lucky as a kid, being from Liverpool we had Beatles music all the time, my old man liked the Stones and Roy Orbison aswell.
I just listened to Baby Shark , yep once was enough.

I always try to play a variety of music for my grandkids. I download 'full albums' as MPEG4s from Youtube and convert them to MP3s using Any Video Converter, then put them on a memory stick. My TV has a decent sound system attached. I get a lot of 70s rock and blues stuff which is extremely tuneful and also some classical and jazz. My two-year-old baby grand daughter loves to dance to the music, but if ever I play any classical music she usually stops what she is doing and listens. She is very funny. I put some time lapse videos of flowers opening to music on the TV and she was not much interested. Then I put up one of a guy demonstrating classic dirt bikes, and she sat and watched it intently. My other two grand-daughters are similar. The oldest one watched an on-board video of a Triumph Trident on the IOM and sat there saying 'I can do that'. I did not say a word. My own two sons watched me crash at about 100 MPH when they were about ten years old. That was good - I never had to watch them road race. The oldest one had a road bike and was extremely careful. He still fell on his arse in the middle of some busy traffic in the middle of an intersection in Melbourne..
The effect that watching me crash had on those two kids, is amazing. The son who had the road bike was riding to work one day and saw one of the local kids dying by the side of the road after crashing his bike. When my son got to work, somebody asked him was he still going to ride his motorcycle. He simply said 'of course - why not ?'

The thing that amazes me with my grandkids is the crap music to which their parents expose them. A lot of it has no theme and is extremely random. I don't think they can develop an appreciation of music that way. The other thing I do, is I don't take them to McDonald's. Near my home there is a plant nursery which has a gift shop and a coffee shop. The kids absolutely love going there for milk-shakes. There is no plastic playground, but they can actually DO things. There are a couple of horses and a few llamas and sheep in a paddock, they can feed. They also try to catch the fish in the ornamental pond, and the baby likes to sit on the statue of the cow. For them, the gift shop is an Aladdin's cave.

I wanted to put a contract out on whoever it was (at her daycare) that introduced the whole baby shark "thing" to my granddaughter.

As a balance and introduction to the real world I put on a Blue Planet episode showing real sharks and how they operate.
She was fascinated that a shark could be so big and would actually eat seals and other fish too!!
I also showed her some old framed photos I took on a night dive on one the reefs off Guadalupe of a Great White that came by curiously close for a better look.

I cannot deal with music her mother has her dancing to. Whenever she and her 1 year old brother are here its Vivaldi, Mozart, Hayden, The Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ray Charles, well I hope you catch my drift.

Interesting thread. Who doesn't like bragging up their grandchildren.;)

As an addendum...I came to The Pub to start a post, saw this thread and forgot what the hell I was going to post about.
Age...ain't it great?

I'm not bragging when I talk about what I do with my grandkids. It really worries me that they might grow up having a total lack of appreciation of the good things in life. So I try to wise them up. That Baby Shark thing is just somebody trying to make money by selling bad taste. And kids don't know any better.

It is like bloody McDonald's and KFC. I sometimes go there when I am travelling and I always wish I had not.
