Hunting and High idle permanent fix! - TRIAL

I’ve only ridden mine twice since I bought it and yes, guess what on the second longer run it was idling high, above 2k and not dropping.

I was reading another post on this and it talked about a Richard-7 manual. What’s that please, and where should I find it? Thanks.

Quickly, you may want to check if the allen bolts holding the throttle bodies to the head are tight.
Britfan found loose throttle body bolts to be the cause of his idling issues.

What about checking the two IAM bolts if they are loose that may also affect the idling revs I believe

It was Richard-7 who found the loose throttle body bolts. He discovered that on some bikes the bolts were bottoming out before fully tight i.e. threaded hole not deep enough. Adding a washer to each should solve that. There's also a gasket that acts as a heat insulator between the throttle body and the cylinder head. It is mentioned earlier on in this thread. Worth fitting if you haven't already got it - not all bikes have it.

Britfan found that the two bolts holding the idle-air-control-valve (IAM) were loose.

In both cases this would allow an air leak that would mess up the tickover.

If it only happens on longer runs i.e. hotter engine, it could be that the heat is causing the IAM to bind and stick open - it's only plastic. Another reason for fitting the heat insulator gasket.

What year bike do you have?

Thanks for the replies. It’s a 2014 bike.

It’s all new to me and i’m on a massive learning curve. I’m not a mechanic but do have related experience and more than happy to get dirty hands.

I know it’s off topic but this is a serious event riding this bike. I had thumbs up from passing cars, kids waving at lights, traffic letting me out..... it goes on. Loving it and coming from sports bikes I find the cafe racer a familiar place to be. Also pinpoint steering, and hot brakes, great sound. Wonderful thing.

If you've got the SC ECU (rather than the Omex ECU) then I've got the software and connector to hook it up to a laptop. It allows the throttle butterfly (and hence the tickover) to be properly set by following the procedure provided by SC. Of course, if there are issues such as air leaks or sticking IAM then those need to be resolved first.

The software also gives you visibility of various sensors etc such as operation of the throttle position sensor, cylinder head temperature sensor and the lambda sensors.

I'm making an assumption about where you are based in the South East. I'm near Gatwick.

Finished !
The heat insulator is a full 2mm thick. Its an easy job really , make sure you have long ball allen wrenches for some of the tighter spaces.

Tony,

Looks pretty straight forward.
Did you have to disconnect the airbox hoses from the throttle bodies to get the clearance for the insulator gasket to go in?

Excellent, that sounds great and a lovely offer if I need it and i’m less than half an hour away, just outside Brighton. Thank you.

I’ll have a look at those bolts etc and nip them all up. I presume no need to get too obsessed with torque values if just nipping up anything loose?

Comet is correct. I found the IAM screws loose....twice. First time was 3 years ago, so I had forgotten. Also, second time was only one screw, only 2 turns was enough to allow the IAM flange to get cocked ever so slightly due to the stiff hose attached to it.

Also, it would only high idle usually after a good highway run, although once in a while, street riding too. I'm assuming this was my problem because after tightening the screws and doing 4 or 5 highway funds for a few hundred miles, the problem has not appeared. Ya can't blame me for still being skeptical though. Takes a while for me to regain my confidence.

Nice job on the gasket, Tony. Really seems to make sense having that instead of metal to metal.

Email Rob at Norton Motorcycles and order it. This is a Norton part , it's not aftermarket . Or get the part number and order through your closest dealer if you have one. Sorry I dont have the p/n if I find it will post it. Tony

Hi Tony,
I have been trying to acquire the Heat insulator Flange from Norton and am having little to no success. I am dealing with Carmen and I mentioned that Rob should be aware of the part, however I have had no response. Would you by any chance have the e-mail invoice with the part number on it. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. As I mentioned in an earlier post I did the SC Idle set and determined the IAC motor is faulty. I would like to try the flange before I replace the motor.

There are grooves machined in to the throttle body mating face and o-rings seated in them.

I have a 2013 961 and am trying to get the Heat Insulator Flange, I e-mail Carmen Carter at Norton but he is not sure what I am looking for. Could I ask you to fill Carmen in as to the part number. Thanks in advance.
Bill
