Incoming - Aluminum Fuel Tank for my Dominator

I would think the gauge of aluminum used in the metal tank is thinner than the thickness of nylon/plastic used in the nylon tanks.
Than can account for some of the increased internal volume.

That may explain it entirely . That plastic/nylon tank is probably 3/8" wall thickness. Now if Norton made an interstate tank that would be very interesting . Say take out the knee cutouts or go wider or taller and make it a "real 5 gallons" accessible before the light comes on. That's almost 270 miles before gas needed . Well you may say "Tony you'll never last 270 miles". Id like to try .

Of course, I ordered the Shiny one :)
May look in to wrapping it but I want to see it first in my hands
The brushed look has a very neat quality of its own for sure, but the polished alloy is the way to go I think.
I had one on my Kaw 903 back in the day. A weekly polishing with good alum paste will keep it looking fine. I wouldn't wrap it. Just get a pad for the rear to protect from belt buckle, or metal buttons.

The only concern I had was the Norton decal on the side of the tank.
You'll have to cover it with painter's tape or the tiny grit in the polish may scratch it.

If I had the $$$ to afford one, I'd snap one up immediately.

I have a polished tank on my commando and a brushed tank on my Naked.
I love them both. Trying to choose one is like choosing which of your kids you love most.

Both tanks are easier to maintain than the painted plastic tanks.
The brushed tank is the easiest of them all. You can simply give it a once over with a scotch brite pad or dish sponge. I use WD-40 to help protect the finish. I simply spray WD-40 on a microfiber towel and wipe it down.

On the polished tank I use mothers aluminum polish once a year and lightly wipe it down with a microfiber towel.

You’re going to love that tank and you’ll appreciate the workmanship that went into making it. It’s a crowd pleaser for sure!

Very nice! Your (delivery?) photo's show a screw on cap but on the bike you have a monza type cap? Are both supplied? Is the monza cap lockable? My Thrux has a monza style cap with a lockable inner cap using the ignition key.

A Monza is a must I reckon...

Surely that alloy thread will cross-thread one day (cold day, gloved hands, in a hurry)?

And / or, alloy-on-alloy threads are surely likely to seize / gall one day?

Some very sexy curves on that tank.
They might be a dangerous distraction for me while riding.

Very sharp.
2 things I'd like to see on a Dominator:
Replace the standard cooler with a chin mtd cooler. Cleans up the frontal view of the motor.
Bikini fairing like the old '78 Guzzi LeMans.

What do you mean by a chin mounted cooler?

Moving it from its current location would certainly benefit the look. But I think it would benefit the motor to as the current oil cooler location does a good job of protecting the head from the wind !

Kinda ironic really ...

The chin mounted cooler is mounted on the lower front frame just in front of the motor with enough clearance to avoid contact with the front wheel upon front suspension compression.
Sport bikes have them, but of course they're hidden behind bodywork.
The cooler is usually V shaped and has a metal screen to prevent stones from the front tire damaging the aluminum cooling elements. It would require fabricating brackets.

I think the race tech appearance would work well on a Dominator, maybe even the Command.

Gotcha!

Yes, that would be a good place for the cooler, and if it clears the front wheel then that’s an improvement over stock straight away !

@ Richard and Matt... there’s a market oportunkty for you, an oil cooler re-mounting kit...

Yes that is what happened to my tank...
Fortunately some grease helped out. And yes, Monza cap is a must. Also if not lockable.

Can't you just wrap the threads with Teflon tape?
It will seal and prevent seizing.
I’d be nervous that with repeated use, bits of tape would get into the tank.
Perhaps a dry film PTFE spray might work?
But for me, it’s just be an excuse to have a Monza cap. Job done!

The screw on cap is included. The monza cap I purchased. It’s non lockable.
