Wow

Sell a guy a cracked head and then not stand behind it. Hope you sleep well.
WOW! Is right.

I told him SPECIFICALLY to tell me what HE wanted for a resolution.

He has yet to contact ME.

Beyond unreasonable to expect a resolution without the client first directing his intentions.

Don't start that crap.

12/7/17 Sent head exactly as I received it, never having looked at it. Just re-packed and sent for his offered price. Head was sold to me as cleaned and ready for use, I was trusting with the seller.

12/11/17 PM from Kevin: All the parts arrived intact. The head was much nicer than I expected.
Thanks,
Kevin

8/14/18 PM from Kevin: That RH4 head you sold me I sent to Jim Comstock and it turns out its junk - cracked all the way through the exhaust valve guide bores. I'm not exactly happy about this but I'll wager you didn't see the sharpie marks indicating the cracks. Any thoughts on how you want to handle this?
Kevin

8/15/18 reply from me:
I never even looked it over, bought it without disclosure, and never did anything with it except pack it better than it arrived and sent it to you.
You tell me what YOU want to do. (sure would have been nice to know much sooner)

I have yet to hear from KEVIN, or I would reply and do exactly as he requests, IMMEDIATELY.

Anyone have any basis for having ANY KIND OF PROBLEM with the above?

OK, so now we have "the rest of the story."

Still waiting on Kevin.

I also asked DynoDave what he thought, he didn't have a ready repair solution.

Kenny Dreer says the head can be vacuum epoxied (he's done it before, or had it done, on VR880 heads)...

The head has a large crack into one of the intake guide holes.

I have also vacuum sealed heads but not when the crack goes into a guide hole where mechanical strength is necessary.

Didn't even unwrap it. It was bought with play money, I had no use for it at the time, so there it sat. I just added better packing and sent it out. I only ever saw it in 2 photos before I bought it.

I am happily refunding the cost of the seats to Kevin (that's what he suggested), and would have gladly paid the full amount for the head (as I previously stated), because I've ALWAYS paid, to the last penny, EVERY claim that I have ever been presented by my clients (and I have ALWAYS allowed the client to state the amount without question or equivocation).

Kinda like "standing behind" what I sell/do/say.

Well, EXACTLY like that.

NOW we have "the rest of the story"...

Doesn't a crack through the guide hole mean the guide is no longer held securely ?

Generally, yes. If it can be repaired with vacuum & epoxy, then carefully reamed to next oversize with sufficient press fit friction, I would think it could be usable once again.

I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS, just heard about it being done successfully by others.

An engineering firm in the UK claim to be able to repair cracked heads using laser welding. I have not tried but they did a good job rebuilding a Commando oil pump boss where two helicoils broke out.

If they can focus the laser they can weld, simple. About 9'' is the max depth at the moment and yes it seems that they have done many Norton heads now. They do these types of repairs on some the exotic cars that crash out of Goodwood, inc hard facing seat replacement on one piece 4 cylinder blocks and heads. Would have thought that someone in the US had this capability and was open to public orders.

In Australia, most of our manufacturing has now gone offshore, so engineering factories which do jobbing work are now much less common than they used to be. I approached one guy to have a few items produced by CNC, and his prices were insane. They never seem to think that the smaller items might be prototypes with potential for much longer production runs. The mindset is 'lay down and die'.

just got back from a visit to EMP in Havant. Had a small crack in a rh10 head laser welded built up and re faced. Did the work while I had a cuppa in their canteen. Alan explained and showed me what was going to be done. Lovely helpful guy. they do every type of engineering job. Lucky to have them so close to me. check them out. Highly recommended.
