I'm only talking about dispacement. Not talking about the different years of bikes and the other changes made other than displacement . Does approximately 100 CC make a better engine, or is 750 perfect?

Depends on your riding style and how either of the two engines meets that. I like the low down Torque of the 850 over the 750 for long rides but the 750 top end does well in short mad dashes.

I had two of each. To be honest, unless I looked down to see which one I was on I couldn't have told the difference. What does make a difference is the gearing. The 21 tooth sprocket gives a very differnt riding experience than the 19. Also, sleeving the m/c makes a huge difference in brake feel.

I think most agree that the 1974 commando 850 is the best norton engine during countless discussions. It corrected and improved on the combat fiasco 750. However all norton commando engines can be upgraded. The performance numbers are not much different between the 750 and 850. I have both engines. Agree that the 850 has more low end torque which i enjoy.

A 750 should have lighter pistons than an 850. It means that the motor should rev differently. The first time a motorcycle is ridden on a race-track, the rider finds-out what it is doing, and adjusts the gearing to suit the circuit. Road-going motorcycles are usually set-up for general purpose - they might look like race motorcycles, but they are not. Most race circuits are much tighter than public roads. A lot depends on the way people think - some people build motorcycles which pull, others build them to rev. I was always used to riding high revving bikes, but my 850 with high gearing and close gear ratios is excellent.

Sprocket choice is important .
After 2 850's I miss my 750 spin up faster . But the wonderful torque is the trade off .
I'm going to research how to get my 2nd . MK 111 850 motor to spin up a little bit faster . We have good engine machine shops here in Toronto .
