I am getting ready to reassemble my 850 & I need to find proper oils etc..

I have scoured my local auto & marine shops with little success:

I'm looking for:
- 140EP for swingarm
- 20w/50 for engine & primary
- 90EP for gearbox
- chain grease
- brake fluid (disc)

I realize there are probably a bunch of options for some of these. Any recommendations would be great & even better if you can direct me to them online . . . I've been searching for a while now.

I should mention I have some 85w/140 . . . but from what I gather that is not going to cut if for the swing arm

This thread has the potential to start another oil riot...but here goes...

Here is a thread with food for thought:

I run 80/90 EP in my outboard gearboxes and so it went into the Norton as well. When I last did my swingarm I think I had 120w sitting around so I used it. I just pulled the swingarm apart for other work I am doing and it all seemed happy, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. As for the crankcase...well I am running 10/40w for diesel engines that I bought at Walmart. I will now be ducking under my desk.

good luck
Russ

Don't forget to get something for the forks!

Are you in some shamefully impoverished 3rd world country? Better tell us where otherwise all the recommendations may outside of your reach....

yeah - the impoverished nation of newport, rhode island.

its mostly the 140wt for the swing arm. just want to make sure i am putting the right stuff in there & not putting anything in jepardy.

i was looking for online vendors as i dont expect anyone to know local shops. figured there'd be a one stop shop online where one could find all this stuff. guess i am crazy.

You can't go wrong with Redline. You can order online and they usually give you a nice hat :D

I'm a sucker for WalMart's in house line of "SynTech" full synthetic oils. They're so inexpensive that I don't feel like a spend thrift when I change it early.

Robert Bauer, at Classic Oil Supply in Richmond, Va, is an expert on proper oils for vintage machines. He can be reached at 804-261-4140.

I think Lawnboy has a 140 weight gear oil for some of their machines' gearboxes. It comes in quarts, that will last a lifetime. Check your local small engine / lawn mower place. Don't get carried away with the rest of the stuff. Over thinking what needs to go in a 40 year old machine is a waste of time. These bikes don't last forever. Use good oils, ride it, and fix it when it is broke. A little mechanical sympathy goes a long ways.

You have a point GJR. At Rabers in San Jose, I was asking about which oil and the reply was "wet and often". Obviously it is better to have decent oil at the proper level and changed often than great oil, tired or not where it's supposed to be.

I applaud your intentions to use lawnmower lubes and the like in your Commandos! Quite right that bikes - some of them anyway; don't tell Jay Leno - don't last forever.

Me, I'm off to eBay to stockpile a few more before you decrease the supply and thereby increase the prices.

Seriously, best of luck, but NOT IN MY BIKES, thanks.

Good oil article for Norton.
Lot of prior discussion that talked about the importance of Zinc content to protect lifters.

Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic gets recommendation after break in with regular oil.

I like the bit on Duckhams 20/50 being developed for air cooled bike engines. The early light green stuff would centrifuge out and block up certrifugal filters and sluge traps. :(

Hi Davidnorton in Newport ,I have been using Shell Rotela T 40 Wt Diesel lube for the last couple of years. I think its great.
Get that bike together for the Auburn meet in June.

P.S. Try Pete A Cafe Cyles in Warren R! for powdercoat 369-5042

Napa carries all the lubricants you need, including the 140W...or my local one does at least

Thanks everyone for all the great replies - very helpful indeed.

Bruce, I know I just found out about the guys in Warren. I had the powder done by a guy up in Vermont - did a fantastic job! The bike will be on the road by the end of April so Auburn is definitely a possibility.

Cheers

I thought it was wine Napa had plenty of.

BTW, I used to live in Benicia, home of Redline Oil.
