What would you chose for rebuilding ?

Hi everyone,

I have to rebuild my engine from scrap, as it turns out that Crankcases are no longer usable, barrels have been bore to the maximum (0.6" if i'm not wrong) and I got one "D" Conrod.
I'v got lot of options, including Maney and JSmotorsports, and finding a donor bike is not easy over here.
I'm a little lost with all the options available. What would be you choice ?

Where are you in the world. If money is no object then build up a maney/js engine. Otherwise I am sure some of us would be willing in assisting in the locating and shipping of an engine to you.
 
Ho, I just updated my profile, I'm from France.

What I'm trying to do is build a reliable engine, which however keep the spirit of the Norton. I've enought budget for a Maney, but I want to keep it a 850.
I'll post soon some pics of Webby03 investigating my crankcase, interresting !

I was thinking of a Maney Barrel/Crankcase, fullauto head, JS Pistons/Cons/Valves, but it's perhaps too much for my road use, however if it increases reliability.... :roll:
 
Build it! And do a thread! You will be fullfilling the dream of most of us.

PS- don't forget to do a Comstock breather, hydraulic clutch, brembo brakes, landsdown dampers and Ikon shocks. Give me a few minutes and I'll think of a few more!

The rest of the bike is in very good shape, I want to change what's not working for the time being... :lol:
 
Salut Xavier,

I had a look on the internet and compared the prices of the Maney crankcase and the Norvil one.
The Norvil one is 862,54 GBP plus TVA (1.035,00 GBP total - 1.242,00 € approx)
The Maney one is 939,00 GBP plus TVA (1.126,80 GBP total - 1.352,00 € approx)

For the price difference I think the Maney cases are the way to go, you might as well go of the cylinders as well. (in fact just go for the 1007cc motor :D )

Could someone out there please tell us what is the max rebore you can go to on a 850? As Xavier mentioned his barrels are 0.060" over, Looking at what's left I don't think you could go any larger.

I saw that price difference... And I thought the same as you, and why not the 1007 ? Hum I'd say I could have problem with the authorities :D
 
Go for the maney cases barrel and crank, Fullauto head and JS carbs, rods pistons valve spring kit and cam all in the 920cc flavor. You will have an engine that is easy to use, keeps up with modern traffic and be utterly reliable. I think this is the combo most people would go with if funding allowed.

LOL :lol: I'm just trying not to lose to much money by chosing non-lasting parts :wink:

Would'nt the Maney lightweight Crank "kill" the Norton nature ? This part is perhaps too expensive for me :roll:
I will keep the Amal as I got new ones.
 
If your crank journals are good, then there is your integral Norton foundation to Build around.. You can find good used items. Late reinforced cases, rebuild able heads, fairly fresh cylinders on and on and on. This will not be cheap either but for goodness sakes, you will save a bundle. There are very honorable attributes and accolades to be bestowed upon people who choose to resurrect these bikes from the dust bins.

If you were to choose such a direction, JLN's spirit would surely be felt in the seat of your pants when your travel the wonderful roads of France on your freshly home built Norton Commando.

If I had the option this is how i would choose to rebuild.
 
Hell yes! Can't say that I know the guy, but seems like a fine chap to me.

Light weight crankshaft/flywheel is only a relative term for Nortons and what's 'heavy' for a 750 ain't for a 920. If you like whiplash response and have a sense of throttle control to learn not to spin right out on leans, like just tipping out a bit to pass a line of traffic and get too eager before more upright, go light everywhere ya can. The lighter pistons/rods also tend to make crank act more massive.
If even more right now response desired get the flywheel OD trimmed back 1/2".
Think about programmable optic triggered PwerArc ignitions.

We save a lot of money by only eating frogs and snails (and the other parts of the animal that everyone else throws away!) :mrgreen:
 
I'd be careful about going too crazy with the Maney equipment. This stuff is intended for people who plan to race these engines and expect to be fettling with them continuously. The 1007 requires torque plates top and bottom when boring or honing the barrels and they are recommended for the 920's as well. These types of extras require a large investment, a machine shop or shipping out to a qualified and equipped shop for what would be a local service if using stock barrels. Sometimes it's best to sacrifice some high performance for low maintenance and long term reliability.

Another perspective: Life is not for the timid so if you are going for the crank you might as well step it out to 1,007c for stump pulling torque and bragging rights; there is no replacement for displacement.

It is the proper thing to do.

Arrrrg You evil temptator :evil: !!! I want a reliable engine first .... I've been eating snails, and Boudin and andouillette for so long to achieve that :lol:
