Hi real newbie to classic bikes, been gifted a 72 commando 750 thats a basket case.

i'm gonna build a cafe racer, not enough decent parts to restore although i'll keep the parts i dont use and do a second standard bike later on.

the engines in bits and the barrels cracked. im in the UK so i'd li a strong engine and was considering a 1007cc maney motor.

what and how would you spec the engine? i ride a modern twin, ktm 990, love the big torque!

it'll have a new frame, i've made friends with the metisse boys and we can build a decent frame using the latest forks, swing arms etc. A bit like the new domi racer...but better ;)

ive seen how much the maney kit is on his site. what else will i need to add, cam, head work, only got the standard 750 head, etc. i can pay for what i want, which is a reliabe torquey and high hp twin..needs to rip and sound like that domi racer on overrun!

So you want to build a Domiracer that is slower and more expensive, nothing odd there plenty have followed the concept.

The basket case you have is better sold off, buy a TTI transmission/gearbox and a FullAuto head to suit the 1007 engine.
You will only need a few sundry Norton parts to finish it, engine covers etc.

Speak to Steve Maney he will give you a good few pointers.

J

+ 20% VAT. :D

For a novice it would be easier in the long run (with no budget ceiling) to buy a turn key engine.
Same with a non Norton Metisse chassis, buy it in rolling form, TTI box and you are 80% there.

ok, thats a poor website!

it that the guy on here with the efi norton on the dyno?

Jim, your website is poor. Stop mucking around with those Norton things and spend some more time on your website.

Jim is probably in the same boat as me, with a poor web site. if you are a one man show like us guys then the last thing you want is more customers and work load that you can handle, you end up with unhappy customers because of a big back log. Its great to have a big flashy website with shopping carts etc but if you dont have the time to handle orders, whats the point, Like me I bet Jim gets most of his work/orders from word of mouth.
sorry to get off topic.but for the OP yep there is plenty of quality parts to choose from out there,

being silly now, you'll be speccing auto and cup holders next....

i'll speak with maney.

as for dearer than a new domi i dont think so. there £40k

I would think that he needs the basket case for ownership title , date of manufacture and registration purposes.....

If ya want liter bike torque sell off the Combat pileof and apply dozen+ $1000's power unit - Maney+TTI box then most of that again on the frame up and outward specialtty noNorton items and finishes. Even if ya fix up the Combat to do what it can, to wake up the 2S cam is like Tylenor by time its effective doseage is felts its entering deadly poison zone. So just have to accept real Norton Commandos limits or best start your special dream machine from scratch. Parting out a un-restorable basket case is only cost effective if time consuming way out now. If ya do decide to over power an un-tamed isolastic Commando I hope you know what you can be in for.

Is that guy with the EFI Norton/Dyno here? Um, well ya,, that's his website you just insulted !!! Way to befriend one of the key people you'll need to build that thing right.. Good thing he seems to have a good humble sense of humor! That said sounds like a fun project if not lost on trendy kid fashion bike crap!

Micky,

You must build a1007 Maney engine.

And use lightweight pistons, similar to JS ones, but with a raised outer edge to maintain squish band whilst having a sensible CR.

A cam designed for lightweight radiused lifters.

A Fullauto head with a full Comstock head job on it inc oversized inlet valves.

Maney belt drive coupled to TTI gearbox.

Tri-Spark ign, FCR carbs (or Jims FI)

Then add half of the CNW parts list, just cos it would be rude not too.

Same attention to the chassis with upgraded brakes, Maxton suspension, etc, etc.

Its SUCH fun spending someone else's dosh!!

My old BSA 175 super ,65 mph tops got me to work and to the cafe's ...£20  I guy who had a Atlas was a least 5 minutes quicker to the next coffee . He had to be 5 mins ahead for his eye sight to restore from the vibes

Ok , now when that 20 -30 000 $ super duper café racer is finished , WHAT are you planning to use it for ?
Race it to the café 's ? .
Maybe better stick to your KTM and spare yourself a lot of money and aggravation ..
