While the head on my 1974 Commando is off for exhaust port repairs, I intend to replace the valve springs, seals and the valves as a bit of a refresh. The 50 year old valve springs are out of spec (short) and the valves themselves are showing some wear (some minor pitting, probably a little worse on the exhaust valves). A friend has gifted me some new valves he had lying around still in the original packaging. The new valves fit snugly in the old guides. They move freely and smoothly but there seems to be no play at all between the stems and guides which I assume is a good thing but I’m wondering if there should be some play between the stems and guides to allow for thermal expansion of either the stems or guides, or is it fine as long as the valves move freely.

Do you have the service manual? There are stem and guide diameter tolerances listed in the service manual.
