the little original owners booklet states: "designed to be the ultimate 1 up touring machine"

and they aren't too far off the mark

but you ain't dusting off many HD riders that give a hoot-

Ahemd to that truth especially the faster you go the better the HD's are compared to a wimpy weakling floppy ear Commando. Main advantage of Cdo over most big twins is they foul for much lean but best wishes surviving taking on a lifted big twin with a sports car rear tire. I have to be mature enough to let em fly by on my poor ole Trixie Combat. Ms Peel even though looked and sounded like a Combat Commando was a whole 'nother critter that indeed did embrass big twins in handling but not pure power to reach highest speeds. I don't like to take Trixie up over 80 as it just feels like I'm tearing her up, even though very nice and smooth and secure feeling I know what's going on down deep.

Why go over 80mph??? Just find the curvyest damn road you can and try not to slow down.
Frankly if you're going over 100mph the roads where you live are too straight-time to move!!!

Ozark Mt's has zillions of mild to wild turning joys and 70 mph is too fast for safety in many turns even if bike capable of it there is no reserves for surprises which is also pretty common here. Essentially any of us still alive ain't crazy out of control so mostly do like everyone else just zoom along w/o excess risk but every now and then some make a memory marker by a naughty acting up. I plan too too just not very much on a regular commando or even a racy level sports bike thankyou very much.

What is always in my scope of awareness is Ms Peel so partly want talking down from what she invited me into, comutes to 90's over THE Gravel and 120 base line curise slowing to 90-100 for the 35-45 marked curves and needle over 130 in the opens w/o any concern or skill needs just watching for cops and deer and hanging to paint line inside or outside in Every turn to be out of the way ahead of time. Past Peel should feel like a slug compared to next Peel and need help to stay sane.

I ride with mixed groups of folks on different kinds of bikes including HD and riceburners. The newer HDs, especially the CVOs are giving me a run in the light to light drags. I rode Harleys after the british motorcycle industry imploded and rode them across the US and Canada, to Alaska and to Mexico. I started to get a bad attitude towards HD when they became more status symbols than machines to ride. The old sense of brotherhood faded. The shops carried more accessories than parts and the dealers started treating the customers as if they were doing us a favor for selling us bikes that cost way too much money. The dealers started to refuse to work on any Harley older than an Evo. Most HDs were showing up at rallies on trailers and not many riders knew how to turn a wrench. I started to feel out of place when I was covered with dirt and bugs all over the bike and me and the HDs were all clean and shiny. I still like old HDs but pre Evo.
Hence, my pride at letting HD riders see my backside when I'm on an old Norton that I've tinkering with the last couple of years. I'm not riding Hogslayer, but I can fantasize.
For high speed running, I've got a 29-year-old Laverda RGS with a top speed over 130 that I brought back to life in the last year. But that's a different forum.

you make a good point- and I for the most part agree. Esp with the transformation of HD dealers/shops. Thats what Indie shops are for.

but....and its a big but- those old school Harley guys are still out there many of them youngsters. It comes down to riding a bike, doesn't make you a biker (ps my 2 hds are a 72 and a 81, both Ironheads so I'm still down and dirty....

I have no idea about the roads in Columbia, but I am sure that there are some good ones.

I live pretty much in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains (Hotchkiss, CO) because of the excellent motorcycle riding.
I moved here after living in between Durango and Silverton for 12 years.
Believe it or not, I got bored riding the Million Dollar Highway (San Juan Scenic byway) every day back and forth to work.

There are a few other Colorado-ites on the forum that can vouch for the quality riding in the area.

If you like a laugh-just put "Antioquia carreteras" on a google image search and scroll down.
I even managed to scare myself!
Al

I did.
It doesn't look like there are too many 80 mph sections on that road.
I'd give it a go!

I've lucked out to have some heart to hearts with old school like 1940's HD old farts now dead about angry sport bikers trying to over take him in the twists so he picked up pace to point of drifting the turns with his hand folded in lap and arrive at next town way ahead of them, while pulling a single wheel trailer... There is a special secret he told me about the advantage of a 3rd wheel which may show up on Peel to really put my best judgement to the test.

Alas there is something in the testosterone flooded nervous systems that just can't stand something in front of them ... besides open road.

a couple of korean bargirls will give you just as much of a thrill, without loosing your license. costs about the same and your 40 year old bike doesn't self destruct.

We don't need no stinkin Korean bar girls! Colombian bar girls are way more dangerous than a 40 year old bike

Oh come on admit it by now you can spend more time viewing and handling a good motorcycle than any mere gal. I mean really, which do ya think leaves more lingering after glow... hope your road orgasms are better than mine... time to time.
In some turns here Peel could make it feel like the G's of peeling over into a strafing run. How can ya resist...

With my broken speedometer cable replaced, I went out looking for a stretch of road nearby where I might do the ton. Ran out of open road because of traffic, but cruised comfortably at 70 mph, then topped out at 80 when wind and traffic made me slow down. Not bad for a 39-year-old motor that hasn't been rebuilt. It felt like it had plenty of legs left. Maybe I ought to think about checking the condition of the also 39-year-old isolastics and swing arm bushings before I push it.

all Cdo's can top the ton but its pensive knowing its like two blacksmiths having at it inside, especially on un known insides. Took my Combat out on errand behaving till got back onto THE Gravel with a SUV kicking up dust ahead, followed a mile till an open ~ 100 yd over a crest and down but the buggers sped up, me and Trixie eating their grit, they even moved into my way some and sped up some, so with opportunity closing nailed it just sort of tire spin to 70's into some groin tightening with isolastics starting to hinge across the loose ruts, got out of blind oncming lane, slowed to 60's-50's and carried on in clear air, then got to my driveway the phone company just cut a new line into for soft to hard spots with grooves to berms of dry sand that left me whimpering in places just going fast enough to not get snatched down. My crazing making reality is the excesses I trigger turn out to safety reflex training for the conditions triggered on me.
