I would like to put a commando mainshaft in an Atlas box so I can run a Commando clutch. I discovered a big problem....the first gear splines on the commando shaft are shorter than the ones on the Atlas shaft. It means the Atlas 1st gear will not slide on fully on the Commando shaft. Any idea why this was done? It means I cannot use the Commando mainshaft in the Atlas box.

My next thought is to see if RGM still makes the adaptor to use the Commando clutch on the Atlas mainshaft.
Any thoughts?

This is probably of little or no value since it is coming from me, but here goes....

What you can do is get a RGM clutch hub for a pre-Commando. RGM was making them for use in a their pre-Commando belt clutch. It has a spacer welded into the outer end of the hub splines that will give you the proper offset to make a Commando clutch work with the pre-Commando mainshaft. I have no clue why AMC/Norton did anything.

I'm currently using a Commando style RGM belt clutch with a TTi gearbox that has the Manx style mainshaft. I also had the RGM belt clutch on a P11 AMC gearbox for a while, but decided to try the TTi gearbox.

This is the hub with the P11 AMC gearbox behind it. Note the weld behind the nut. You're welcome
