Trans lube Question

Thanks. Fortunately for us, the violence is pretty much restricted to border areas - 700+ miles from our normal "hangouts."

The price (for Mexico) of actually trying to do something about drugs is the violence. Previously, the police (considered corrupt by all citizens) essentially turned a blind eye to it and receive bribes as well. The current president, Felipe Calderon, vowed to actively deal with the problem. So he realized that using the police to fix it was essentially useless so he brought in the Army to do it. The result is a lot more violence because the army is not corrupt and they have the firepower to actually fight with the drug guys. But it's hard to tell if it will actually work to stop, or at least dramatically reduce drug-funded power.

Calderon is also trying to un-corrupt the police forces. He wants to bring all of them under federal control but most of the local police/city mayors do not want that to happen. Calderon only has another year or thereabouts in office (mandatory single 6-year term for the pres) so it will be interesting to see if his successor continues the fight or goes back to the "live and let live" philosophy which was pretty much standard here for many years.

OTOH, we walk around in Mexico City (DF) and San Miguel de Allende (SMA) at all hours, including after dark and we have never had a feeling of any general danger in doing so. There are tons of great restaurants/shopping within an easy walk of the house (in DF or SMA). Heck, if you want to buy a new Ferrari, the dealer is maybe a 10 minute walk from our house in DF! No Norton dealer though. :)

Resurecting this old one due to needing for some further info please.
I'm still considering which way to address the clutch rod seal business.

My Dear Mr Comnoz,
could you be so kind as to expand a little on the lip seal please, G 6x10x2 S perhaps or similar?
(I don't have mine out yet) is there one end of the mainshaft better suited for alteration?
Did you bush the clutch rod hole in the mainshaft to limit clutch rod runout at the seal?
would AFT in the gearbox negate the need for a seal?
Thanks for any reply.
All the best.

I've got DynoDave's clutch seal to hold back the ATF in tranny for a dry belt drive and worked a treat. The only deal with ATF in tranny besides less drag and actually getting some lube to sleeve bushes while in lower gears, is if any does get on clutch plates its less detrimental than thick bulldozer gear lube. Barnett says to wet new or resurfaced plates with ATF to prevent chatter on initial bedding in.

The seal I have used was the advance pin seal from a stanadyne diesel injection pump. Since I used to run a diesel shop I had a lot of them. The shaft diameter is about 5.5mm and I think the bore size was about 12mm. Sorry I no longer have a pt number but maybe this will help. Jim

What keeps the trans oil back, the precise fit of the drill bit? I take it the 6mm ball bearing goes between the 2 shafts?

i am using Redline Shock proof oil(blue in colour) in my gearbox, no signs of weeping although the test of time will tell
love the idea of the ATF though.
Regards Mike

I had no leaks on hard run Ms Peel with standard sealing methods and to hot to touch gear box with almost normal level ATF. Nor did those well before me doing it. I run ATF level to just over the lower gear seen though the inspection cover but know none of even the best lube in the world can get into the sleeve bushes when not in top gear or just stilling still. To those that really nail their rides a lot, you can definitely feel less drag in power response over thick gear lube. Fine for tractors but give me higher heat carrying off thin ATF for maxing out rpms. Thin oil transfers/conducts heat better than thicker. Its the bush spaces that must be fed lube the most not the cog teeth. Wonder if the drag racers with automatics worry about too thin lube on their cog teeth and bushes?
