This is probably a crazy idea but I thought I’d ask, has anyone used the Amtrak Autotrain to travel with their bike? The rally is 2300 miles away for me and I’ve always wanted to travel across the USA by train and thought that this maybe a great opportunity to do both. I haven’t done any investigation at all but I thought that someone may have checked this out.
Thanks - Dave

I have some friends in Florida who have been doing a one-way Autotrain trip up the east coast every winter, then they freeze their asses off getting back south on bikes. The ride is aptly named "Frosty Nuts"

Their train leaves Orlando and travels up near Washington DC where they offload and start their ride. Not sure how many Autotrain routes there are, but they all say it works just fine. They eat and drink their way north on the train.

I googled it and found that there is only one auto train and it runs from Sanford Fl to Lorain Va. That doesn’t do me any good, oh well I guess that idea is a crash & burn.

Hey drp, there may be an alternative to the auto train. Ship your bike to a metro area near the rally, ride it and then ship it back. Fly, drive or take a train for yourself. I have used forward air twice to ship bikes to a buyer and have had good luck. You schedule the shipment and take the bike to their depot. They provide what is essentially a mini container. You provide the tie downs and the locks,
load the bike yourself and they ship it.
