Hey everyone, I've been riding for 20 yrs (dirt bikes mostly) but really want to build a bike this winter (in Edmonton that's 3/4 of the year!). I came across this ad and am just wondering if it might be worth it to start my project with this engine.......

I don't know if the link will work or not but thanks in advance to ANY response at all.

Unless you have a Commando rolling chassis to put it in, its going to cost an awful lot of $$ to find all the little bits and pieces that go into a Commando, AND all the big bits too. Which is fine if you have lotsa $$ to throw at it, or never actually want to ride it...

No way of knowing how good that engine is either, or if everything is inside, or in good condition. Could be a heap of junk.

Sentiment is fine, but at least find something reasonably complete and intact ?
One opinion - sorry to disappoint !!

Cheers.

Hey no disappointment at all! This is why I joined up here in the first place........the dude does have a frame for sale as well........he lives close so I might go check it out anyways. I understand about the $$..........I work in industrial fasteners (oilfield) and have access to machine shops/fab shops etc. so I think I could cut some of the $$ off........I just want to build something I can RIDE!! Thanks for the advice man............

$1500 for the engine and tranny. I bet he wants another $1000 for the frame and other crap. You can find a running bike for a bit more if you look.

Yes an incredibly big, long term project nate.
Even those who have done this severel times still find it hard.
Look in the forum For Sale... "Have it your way". Paul has one for sale, not completed.
May do a deal as a semi complete option.
AC.

Great advice guys...........I've been told before to try to find a project that someone else has lost interest in/$$ on and go from there........I'm just trying to get a feel for this, send out my feelers. I've learned a lot in the last few years with my truck (86' chev blazer 4 x 4 with a 350 small block) about fixing things and building things and really want to build a bike. I last rode an 82 xs special 450 (when I was a kid in 97......oh wait I"m still a kid) and now a few friends have some Triumphs and what not. I really want a bike to ride full time in the summer, but don't want a "Harley" or some other stigmatic hog. That's why I'm sending out feelers, and hoping to get some insight into how a 33 yr old "jack of all trades master of none" can get the ball rolling. Thanks for the input and comments I understand how you guys could just write me off, and it's really nice to have some actual adult-mutual-respectful conversation on a site that I just joined. I reckon I'll look a little more for used stuff on this site and in my area..........................I will build it and ride it and take pics..........with all your help!

Good God! That motor has Dunstall rocker covers...a set just sold on Ebay for 200 bucks!

Better buy it!

Nate,
Just to support the general consensus, this is not the best way to start on a Norton project. I think $1500 is too much for an engine and gearbox without really knowing it's condition and as others have said get a more-or-less complete project for a couple of thousand or a decent runner for 5,000 plus.

There are at least 3 different suppliers of NEW finned rocker covers, most of em well below $200.
Shop around....

Getting off the topic here...

The 71 Long range Fast backs are rare, and now sort after, plus i think a good looking model. When they first hit the market the press give it a cold reception.
Hard parts to get are the tanks,if you can find one ,build it!...another plus is the tanks are steel, resistant to your E15 fuel :)

I've never seen a Norton engine sell for more than $1,000 unless it was overhauled or at least guaranteed to be in good running order...

You should be able to find a more or less complete running Commando for $1,500 with just a little bit of effort on your part. $2,500 will get you a rider.

From one noob to another, I would pass and look for a more complete project. I bought a barn find basket case but 90% there bike for $800 so they are out there. Finding parts can be trying and expensive, so the more you have to work with the better. Plus, like others have said, you dont know about the motor, and as I have found out the hard way, the norton motor is unique and your exerience with other motors may not serve you as well as hoped. My advice, find a running beater and restore it to past glory.

I can tell you after working on cars for 20+ years of all sorts from 59 Chevy Impalas to Mustangs and 931 Porsche I was intimidated to work on the Norton when it was accquired! Heck, I can drive Bradley Fighting Vehicles, M1 Abrams and just about all the wheeled vehicle inventory in the United State Army and the Norton still had me nervous!!

I agree with all that state you need to find a complete or 90% complete bike to start with. All the little doodads and widgets that go into making a Norton or any bike to go are numerous and can turn out to be quite costly. Just buying turn signal pods and stems will run you 20-30 bucks unless you want original Lucas, then that can get close to $100 for a decent set when found. I have a 74 Roadster that was complete but once I finished with mainly basics (Tires, hoses, brakes, battery, petcocks etc) and upgraded to Power Arc electronic Ignition and oil tank modification from CNW, I was in the bike for $3000! If you just start with an engine and tranny you might as well call Matt Rambow at CNW and have him do a custom job for you, would probably be same price wise!!!

I live in Mississippi and have seen very few Nortons but there is one on craigslist in Alabama going for around $6000 if I remember right and it looks good from pics but you cannot trust those! $1500 for a drivetrain seems a little over the top and what if it is bits and pieces inside? Then you are looking at a decent wad of cash to get the parts and have the machining done!

Find you a good running or barn find Norton and go from there. It is better to have as complete a bike in front of you starting off new on these babies. Flea Bay usually has a couple on there alsong with the IONA site, even here. Good luck and welcome to the board.

Good luck but as others have said this is overpriced so my advice is to keep looking...Edmonton ,keep the ice cream on the windowledge. Yow.
