Please help me understand why you have to push down and turn counter clockwise on the top fork nut and then clockwise when securing/installing the front fork
You have to push down to overcome the spring preload, turning anticlockwise until you feel a click stops the thread being crossthreaded, it shows the ends of the threads on the nut and tube are aligned.

It's really good practice practice (especially when screwing into plastic) to line up the screw, then with a slight forward pressure rotate the screw anti clockwise until you feel the screw 'drop" into the lead of the thread, then immediately start to turn it clockwise.
