Trying to figure where I can store some emergency tools on my '72. Seems to be some hollows, nooks and crannies under the seat but how to attach the tools? Velcro? Since I'll never be riding two up I thought about cutting a slot in the seat pan and hollowing out some of the foam to make a storage compartment. A"smuggler" would be nice but way overpriced. Any ideas? Thanks, Rick
 
I never leave home without my magnetic tank bag full essential Commando emergency tools.

Cell phone, credit card, and telephone of a friend with trailer are also required for transit.

Also, advance prepared speech for my wife complete with telepromter and flow charts.............

And very importantly, a gentleman does not motor about after dark.
 
So where o where does that little plastic tray go? I also cary either a small tank bag or my saddle bags (both Cortech and I love them) for tools etc.

Huh, that is pretty cool. I was thinking of shoving a roll or something in that same spot, but the little tray looks quite handy...
 
Watch out for Ebay...Clubman Racing lists the tray for less than $20.00. Looks like a handy part if it fits the bike.

On some models ('72?-'73?) I think the flasher relay and rectifier may have to be repositioned in order to fit the tray, which has a depth of 2 inches.

Also a '72 owner...the tools originally go in the left side cover pocket - battery side. Are you still using the original side cover?
 
If you're tight like me an old safety classes soft case, the type that looks like a bum-bag, fits in there just nice and it's free :D.

I always attached a cylindrical leather tool bag directly behind the seat. That piece of plastic crap isn't big enough to hold all the tools you need to keep a Norton off the side of the road.
 
Yeah it's the original and has the compartment but I was reserving that for a spare Boyer, fuses,connectors,plug,etc. I like the tray but it won't hold all the tools. I'm leaning to create a space in the rearmost part of the seat. Need to think it thru, assemble the tools and arrange them the most compact way to determine how much space i'll need. Maybe the tray too
 
I use an Interpol tank, the radio recess is lined with waterproof fabric and a small tankbag fits nicely, I use the MK2A onwards toolbox for the commando only spares and the general toolbag fits in the tankbag which swaps to whatever bike I am riding.
 
Mine are stuffed into the side cover as originally fitted. However I also carry a leather tool roll bungied behind the grab rail or to my luggage rack. It holds a big exhaust collar wrench and some rags & things.
 
Bought another Interpol tank recently to have the choice of 2 colours, orginal is in Silver so went for black, powdercoated for £20 and the tank was £30 off UK ebay.

Man oh man I want one of those Interpol tanks! Never seen one for sale. Do you have to be in the right place at the right time or are they readily available?
 
Regularly come up in UK and don't go for much when they have the radio cutout. But they are useful as they have 3+ Uk Gal capacity, more it you can get one without the cutout. Shipping would be expensive. You need to modify an Interstate seat to move it forward as well.
