TonyA visits Niagara Falls - 2019

Cleaned my bike yesterday.

Richard, are your pipes chrome? Love the blueing and the fact they’ve not gone that straw / brown colour like stainless normally does.

It looks like a British Bike !

More goodies from Canada . I installed the full 1 in. spacer I got from David under my offset mount. You only have to extend 4 wires all were bullet connectors which I have on hand. The clutch switch wires and the front brake light switch wires . These spacers actually match the diameter of the Norton spacer for a nice look. I became VERY motivated to increase my comfort after that long run. ( 650 miles stopping for gas only ) . The weak link in the chain was me (my physical fitness). Sorry to mis-speak , The front brake lines and clutch line has to be lengthened . I forget that not everybody is keeping up with my project . So the lines and only 4 wires . (see above). If you check with HEL USA they should have saved the measurements so now you can just order up the lines from them .

Yes. Chrome in 2014. Newer bikes have stainless.

Wow, Richard. Those header flange bolts look new. Mine are a rusty mess. I even spray them with S100 corrosion inhibitor. Doesn't work.

Any interest in the SC to Omex ECU adapter bracket ? This will allow the mounting of the New Omex ECU to the single seat Commando SC 961 ! Direct your questions to Richard-7 . David said he would make another batch if the demand was there . We can start another thread if need be. Here it is again :

The blueing is definitely something I love because growing up, all my dads bikes like bsa and triumphs and ariels and nortons always had the bluing.

Hmm..... as far as I am aware they are stainless. But perhaps depends on the year. I don’t spray oil to keep rust away. Only spray wd40 to clean the dirt off of them.

I don't think so, Richard. At least not on mine (titled 2014, built January 2015). The studs are black oxide finish steel, and the nuts are cad or zinc (I can't tell the difference) plated steel. It also has the stainless pipes.

I'm constantly in a salt water environment and ride a lot in the winter when they spread ice melt on the roads. I try to keep up with the corrosion, although its a losing battle. I even take a soft brass brush to the cooling fins to brush off that pitting. Nope.

When my dealer ordered the SBN system for my 961 in 2013, Matt Capri explained that the SBN 2-into-1 pipe and silencers were made of stainless like the stock factory headers.

I would think chroming is as expensive in the UK now as it is in the US, so to reduce costs, I would make my headers from SS.

The bluing does look like what you find on chrome pipes.
However, the pipes on my Hinckely Bonneville are SS, and they blued from the exhaust port to the first bend, then browned from there down.

I’d swap them for brass nuts, before it’s too late and they’re seized on solid...

The look alone would make me want to change them out. Stainless nuts and Maybe a touch of anti-seize on the threads too ? That salt air is slowly corroding your bike . Are your neighbors bikes doing the same thing ? I know that washing the residue off after a ride in ocean air is supposed to help greatly. Does anybody know of a product that can be sprayed on to help this ? Like LPS 3 ? That's what we used in the Navy to control the avionics corrosion on the jets . LPS 3

Is anybody else having a corrosion issue like this ? How many members live near the ocean and ride their bikes ?

There is this one, Salt-Away, used by many of the participants at the Bonneville salt flats, both before and after being on the salt, as well as sometimes during the meet to remove salt buildup. I've also had veterans of the salt tell me to regularly spray with WD40, but I haven't tried that so far. I suspect LPS3 would serve a similar function.

I've used it, and it does help, but nothing is 100% effective at Bonneville. I tear the race bike down completely, to the last nut and bolt, every year that it is run, and always have corrosion to deal with.

A two step process wash with salt away and then use a inhibitor next . Repeat as necessary , every ride etc ? My question is are those living near the ocean having this issue ? Like you Ken , close to the ocean ?
