Brilliant, I would love a place like that.

Can you just buy a plot and put up a building like that without any interference from the local authorities?

Yep. It is outside the City limits, and the county is very lenient as long as you don't disturb the neighbors (too much), or especially don't mess with the aquifer that we all share for drinking water (i.e. don't dump pollutants on the ground). No permits whatsoever, UNLESS you want to connect to municipal utilities.

Today was my most frustrated/frustrating day since the dozer operator screwed up. I'm trying to assemble what appears to be the worlds cheapest/flimsiest shower stall (probably made in china).

It appears to be impossible to slip the flimsy "wall" sheets into the almost-as-flimsy corner bits that require a certain angle that I suppose MIGHT be able to achieve with two people each holding the edges of one sheet, and a fifth person tapping the edges with a rubber mallet.

The only problem is, 5 people don't fit in that corner of the bathroom...

Seems fair, you would not believe the hoops you would have to jump through here, just to be told you can't do it anyway.

A nurse my wife used to work with wanted to build a house on some land owned by her dad, it was knocked back because the council planning department felt the house would be too valuable when finished due to its location.

Just gov't overstepping.

Petty minded jealously. i know we don't have the room like America, but this was on her dads farm, apparently the view was to die for and the finished house would have been worth considerably more than it would have been if it was within a housing estate but I cannot see how that is a reason to knock planning.

You're treated like you don't own the land anymore. I don't care what country you live in..... I feel my BP rising so I'm going quiet.

Did I mention I very much dislike alleged attorneys?

In A case like THIS, I would engage one immediately, and appeal to a higher authority.

Not letting one build a private home on private land? ABSURD in the extreme. (unless, perhaps, they were going to build an odd, ramshackle eyesore without adequate infrastructure, or who-knows-what)...

Actually, I PERSONALLY would formulate and present the appeal. I have never had use for attorneys, since the first (and last) one represented me in my divorce in 1981. I've been successful every time I represented myself.

the county i live in in NE Tn is like where grandpaulz is at. no zoning no building permits. you do have to do an electrical and septic permits if you are going to hock up to power or have water going into the building. nothing like living in a free state.

It was 8 years before Cherokee County knew I had put a home on my land!

Of course, one cannot do that if one must finance thru a bank or other lending institution, or go thru a builder who insists on following all the permitting rules.

Slick

Its all perspective .Imagine you have built your dream home with a view across the valley. Then your neighbour builds 3 ugly 3 storey houses overlooking your back yard. And blocking your view, but with a wonderfull view across the valley. Then sells them on and goes off to build his dream home with the proceeds. Who are you mad at?. That's what its like in the uk unless you fight with the Authorities , You may win,but then the Gov erment can overrule and the work proceed. Enjoy the space while you have it. Even with rules anything is possible.

I thought the Queen owns the lands and just lets the serfs live on them, have things changed? :D

I think Gov actually anywhere can just take your land wether you like it or not , read in paper this morning USA fed gov has upped the pressure on southern border land owners (Texas) in the courts to expropriate their land , Gov taking private land to make room for “The Wall” , don’t think it would make much difference to me if it the Crown or elected Gov taking my land cause I wouldn’t sell .....

If you think you own your house just try to torch it and see what you get. That's their tax base.... You can't even take your own life because they own that too. I'm shutting up now.

A few years ago , well prolly 20yrs gone now , my buddy and his family had built a large 2-storey log home in a rural area of New Brunswick ( he was Border Services) it was just a lovely dream home which he spent a long careful time getting it just right , everything including stairs built from logs , anyways Gov. decided to twin the high way not that far from his home , they made an offer with 30 day decision timeline , he hired a lawyer and was told it was a no win for him , try to negotiate upwards a little and settle .... that what he did .... he took the offer , sold the house and a bunch of us went up and took it apart during a long week of forced labour Haha! ... he had a piece of land which he also sold to house buyer and over the next year he put house back together for the buyer , he said he still ended with a financial loss ,just not as bad .... if stuff like that happens in Canada it could happen anywhere ....

Back to the hangar/shop...

I've done a preliminary round of wall base angle weatherproof/sealing, by spraying foam insulation in all the big cracks, letting it cure, then using sealant caulk in any remaining holes/voids, then spraying "Flex Seal" on the entire joint between walls and floor. JUST IN TIME, it has started to drizzle...

The new shop/hangar is taking shape...

Installed a rubber door sweep, and that completes the entire weather deck perimeter.

Slab forms are removed now, so it's looking more complete.

Off topic to the building, but I completed the 2nd aileron build; it came out better than the 1st one the previous owner built, and I was able to get the sailcloth fully installed and closed the zipper (the other one is 1/4" short, leaving the zipper completely open, I'll fix it next). Anyway, full right stick shows ailerons fully deflected opposite each other...

will you be able to just , roll out of overhang and fly ?

Don't think you have any choice! Eminent Domaine! The government can take you land for the good of the people. The Constitution requires that they pay fair value for the land. Much of the land on the southern border is pretty iffy rangeland and not suitable for much of anything.
What? Run 1 cow for every 40 acres and still have to feed them.?

Sometime in about 2 weeks I will again rent a Bobcat with bucket or grapple/bucket and backfill the front and "right" side of the slab, then relocate literally TONS of trees in spoil piles into central burn locations and do two huge fires a day till it's all gone. Already cleared with authorities - "just don't let it get out of control, we're having too much fun being locked down"

After the backfill, I will be able to roll out straight ahead, then line up with one of three runways, depending on wind direction, and take off. If it HAPPENS to be a prevailing headwind (or near dead calm) as I roll out, I hope to have everything smooth enough that I can just take right off leaving the hangar.
