Hello from Germany, i am new to this Forum and have a question:

I have a 750 Fastback MK 1 which will be rebuilt in some sort of Flattrack style ( wide bars, single seat, getting rid of all the stuff which is not necessary and so on)
I now wonder if there are any tanks which fit onto that frame with no or smaller modifications. I was thinking of an Yamaha SR500 tank , because these bikes have a big top frametube as well.
Has anyone ever put a different tank on a Norton Commando?
I know that there are a lot of very nice aluminiumtanks available for Commandos but my budget is limited

The Hi-Rider tank would probably look nice on a flattracker styled bike.

A P11 tank might work. I can't remember the guys name who built those cool red Norton P11 flat track race bikes but they are pictured in many books on Nortons.

I believe you are speaking of Ron Wood (Alex Jorgenson and Dave Aldana rode for him). He often used P11 motors and primaries (engine and tranny closer) so he probably had P11/G15 tanks around. It would take some modification to make these fit a Commando frame, where a Hi-rider/SS tank would drop on and looks identical from 30 feet away!

Thanks for the quick answers.
I know the Hi rider tank it looks good, but it is glasfibre right?

I would prefer metal

Hi I have fitted a modern Triumph tank on my Norton
I had to cut away some of the inner panels
I can post pics if you want but that will be harder than doing the tank mods

There is the chap in Scotland that does a seat and tank unit go to Alluminium tank shop on line

My Hi-rider tank is steel. I suspect it came from a MkII or Mk III 850, but it has both types of rear mount - threaded holes for the cross piece and the lugs for the rubber band....

Don't forget that you're in the land of the Devil's Evil Cousin (TUeV). I'd strongly recommend a fuel tank from one of the German manufacturers such as www.wbo-racing.de or http://www.stefano-race.de/ . There is a third one but I can't remember the name. I've heard some good and some bad things about them but the bottom line is that dealers outside of Germany give a sh*t about TUeV approval as they don't have to. Non-metal tanks are more or less illegal as a retrofit here. I know this from personal experience, I tried to negotiate with the TUeV whether it was possible to have a DIY tank legalised which would have been done to pretty high specs and with material certificates and everything. Even with all that and a very good relation to a TUeV testing centre it would have been well into five digit EUR figures. Metal based tanks are a lot easier but still a hassle.

Just my €0.02

Hello Tim , i know exactly what you are talking about, and from personal experience as well i know that you are 100% right ! :?

On the other hand when all my plans get real the tank will be one of the minor problems......
We will see, i know a very "mellow" TÜV-person who will be dealing with all that stuff

I bought an aluminum tank from Waldridge Motors for $395 US. This is complete with Monza filler and cap. They are a little rough and need to be finished. I used All Metal™ filler. They are not suitable for polishing, paint only. After all I've read here about tank sealant, I decided metal is the way to go.
