So I got it back together and can report that the gearshift is way better than before - no missed shifts and everything noticeably tighter.It would appear that excessive backlash in the quadrant/camplate was the culprit. Has to be down to wear - bike has done an indicated 24k miles, so not particularly high mileage.The neutral light was even working until I took it for a test ride, and it's packed up again... I think I can live with that.
