Hello everyone,

I've got my rear wheel out, changing shocks and repairing a split mudgard (fender I think to our friends over the pond ); can anyone tell me if there should be any lateral movement / play in the swinging arm ? I can feel a small amount of movement if I move both arms left or right although it moves the bike on the stand when do it.

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm still feeling my way with the old girl.

Thanks

Age of swingarm spindle? I assume you have no additional clamping on the spindle aside from the stock configuration?

Unfortunately I don't know the age of the swing arm spindle and I can't see anything other than a stock fitting in there.

There is usually some movement-because of the Isolastics. Have you checked the Isolastic clearance?

But is that movement between the swinging arm and the cradle, or is the cradle also moving with the swinging arm (place the fingers of one hand so they touch the swinging arm and the cradle and then feel for any movement between the two parts as you pull/push on the swinging arm with your other hand?

You will feel swing arm play if the front mounts (iso's) are loose. Just a small amount will transmit visible movement at the back.

Normal is no slack at swing arm spindle to cradle but also normal for some rear patch/swingarm side to side motion as it pivots on rear iso to show up at front iso slack. Upgrade is placing locating collars over spindle. Worn spindle can be rotated to wear on a good area. If oil runs out long enough spindle rusts and wears and gets trapped.

Common is to find some slack in spindle but its about a non issue unless really pressing handling, mostly might feel a twitch then nothing else. Possible in some loading, wind, road and tire condition a slight oscillation could build up to annoy, then disappear to confuse ya.
