Thanks guys for the suggestions, I will pull the tank and try to measure the gap in the top collar of the steady and take it from there , don't know if clamp and cut would work cj but shimming is an option and seems less of a faff than grinding it to suit although more proper. The collar should be the correct size in the first place.

Got the new strobe so will get that done today but it does seem to be running rich on the VM34 going to check that out as well.

Cheers Jg

nice to see another one getting back to use. how many projects have you got going on. I have one to chase but not holding out much hope. another person with a commando that hasn't run for years, but likes looking at it with a view to get to it one day, he has had it like this about 20 yrs.

At the moment I have two , 70 t120, 72 750 combat, the rest are just breakdowns. 69 750 lost the plug threads in an old helicoil repair on Monday ,I got a timesert put in yesterday ,it is in and holding just to do a weekend run, if it holds great, but it will need a bit of attention to get it sorted properly. If it wasn't for bad luck, I would have no luck at all just now!

The head is back on the old 69 bike , but I sent the old carbs away for a bit of a refurb they should be back soon.took the new carbs and fitted them to 71. The RGM head steady was skimmed by Kommando(thanks John) and it is now doing what it says on the tin, cheers for the input Cash! Took it to the lakes rally and other than the balance pipe coming loose and the centre stand Spring falling off she was good! Did the DGR in Glasgow, heavy rain throughout and torrential on the way back to the shire, the bike had a wee firework display at Pacific Quay when the t/s plug lead came loose. I have fitted Don Penders single pull carb cable, will run bike on Saturday .

Long time since I updated this post, took the 69 bike to Armoy July 18, 2200 miles to the NOC International Rally in Austria and the NOC national in Melrose .
The 72 bike project has been shelved along with everything else as I was supposed to be part of the Easy rider Bonneville challenge but it has fallen through but I’ve decided to take the commando 750 myself as a team of one!
The bikes been put together and has been run at Elvington with a few hiccups but the engine is tight and dynoed at 48.5 hp, with a 26 tooth c/s sprocket she ran a shade over 108 in third top gear was a wash out with the big sprocket.

I’m having a problem removing the main bearing from the drive side case with heat and a tap. The bearing has been installed with too much bearing fit and has made the inner race very tight.
Will a slide hammer with a suitable insert be of an aid for its removal?

I have welded a bolt to the old inner race, then tap it out from the outside.

I've also drilled two tiny holes at the outer shoulder and tapped them out with a thin punch...

Hi if you run a bead of weld inside the race it will shrink and the race will fall out. Every time. Look at this clip starting about 2:30. Sorry is in German but is self-explanatory.

hope it helps.

have a good Weekend

Cheers I’ve used this method on wheel bearings a few times , works a treat.
I’ve removed the bearing by using a blind bearing puller, heat up the cases and it came out with a few taps with a small pein hammer. On inspection I’ve overdone the bearing fit but the bearing is still in perfect condition and I’ll reuse it.
I did not fancy drilling holes in the cases Paul, I’ve seen cases with this before but with the cost of cases now decided that I would not go down that route.
I’m waiting for my Maney camshaft to come back from Germany and I’ll get the bearings back in and get them back together.
Thanks for the input.
